Jets Tank? First Round?

Simply put, the Jets looked awful in their season-opening 27-7 loss in Kansas City on Sunday.

How bad? The Daily News recounts:
There were seven fumbles, three turnovers, six dropped passes, eight penalties and a blocked field-goal attempt in which rookie kicker Mike Nugent slipped on an imaginary banana peel.

So bad, linebacker Jonathan Vilma has a fat, bloody lip – courtesy of a sideline altercation with teammate Justin Reed in the third quarter. So bad, All-Pro center Kevin Mawae apologized, saying he individually ‘choked’ on three errant shotgun snaps. So bad, the Post’s Steve Serby chirped, “That sound you hear is Paul Hackett cackling.” – Ouch, stay down.

On the bright side, tight end Chris Baker emerged as a solid target for QB Chad Pennington, and Laveranues Coles looks to be a go-to guy at WR this season, provided he hold on to the ball, of course.

You do have to wonder if coach Herman Edwards saw this coming. On Saturday, he gave the team the ‘This is a 16-round heavyweight fight’ speech as a final send-off into the regular season. Every player seemed to be using the metaphor after the game. The Jets will host the Miami Dolphins at 4:15 p.m. Sunday.
