Gotham Gazette Gives Voters Some Help

The primary is next Tuesday, and it seems like some registered Democrats still don't know who they will vote for in various races. Luckily, Gotham Gazette has some great resources for New Yorkers, including an excellent Guide for the Last Minute Voter. GG has a handy grid of where the candidates stand on the issues, as well as a grid of which endorsements they have received. And you can see what other races, such as for Manhattan Borough President, Public Advocate, and City Council, are being run in their Campaign 2005 section - you can find your Council district there, too!

So, get informed and get ready to vote on September 13. You'll be happier on Election Day (November 8) if you do. And why, dead God, is P.Diddy so quiet about voting or dying this time around? We'll have to comfort ourselves with the Douche or Turd episode of South Park.

  • is this city full of spoiled b

Ingrates. How many people around the world would give their firstborns away just to have a chance to vote, and you spoiled brats act as if it's some kind of annoyance. Be glad you have the right to vote, kids.

  • The democratic candidates have been really laying it on thick. Not for nothing, but the amount of times I've seen Anthony Weiner and his minions around Park Slope campaigning is just plain out of control. And this is coming from someone who will most probably be voting for him on primary day!

There's such a thing as laying it on too thick. This primary is definitely more pushy than others in the past.

I want the software that keeps candidates from bugging me every morning at the subway station with their flyers and their gladhanding!

It's not a turd, it's a turd sandwich. Learn the difference.

  • I want the software that prevents the mailings, too. A waste if you ask me.

THANK YOU GOTHAMIST for posting these informational links!

This is from that Gotham Gazette link:

    WHAT IS AT STAKE?

The mayor and other officials who are elected to run the city government for the next four years face significant challenges.

On education: New York City has 1.1 million school children, but only about half graduate on time.

On housing: Nearly a quarter of renters pay more than 50 percent of their incomes for housing. And the city also has a record number of homeless people, about 35,000 people in the city's shelters, 25 percent more than four years ago.

And on transportation: The last new subway line opened in New York City nearly 65 years ago.

To highlight some of these issues that are - or are not - being discussed in the campaign, Gotham Gazette did a series of articles on the challenges facing the city over the next four years. Several of them also explain candidates' views or track record on the issue. Read our Campaign 2005 articles on:

The facts speak for themselves. All information was thoroughly researched.

Essentially, the facts point to Bloomberg's inexperience. He was elected in 2001 with absolutely zero public service experience. He's learning on the job. Bloomberg may have an MBA, but where in business school did they teach about the proper way to run the OEM, keep the homeless off the street and gain some control back from Albany?

The major Democratic contenders all have many years of public service experience, and know that running a city goes beyond chasing the bottom line.

There are only six days left until the New York City Democratic Primary. The Primary is just as, if not more, important than the election in November because in the Primary we'll decide what Democratic candidates to put up. For some races (i.e. Borough President, Public Advocate, etc.) the Primary will determine the election because there just aren't that many Republican candidates in a place like New York City (thank God). But that means there are some bad Democrats out there. So, get your ass to the poll (find your polling place here).

But if you really care about New York City politics (and you should because they affect you!), I suggest you try the new software by 2002 Libertarian candidate for New York Governor Scott Jeffrey. Jeffrey created LegalizeVotes.com at first to help promote his organization's issues (the legalization of marijuana and same-sex marriage) but LegalizeVotes quickly developed into a way for any New Yorker to start their own Get Out the Vote (GOTV) campaign without leaving their home or office. With this easy-to-use, web-based software you can look up your friends, send them a reminder to vote, endorse your favorite candidate and send them a MapQuest link for their polling site. It's super easy and fun because you can also check out your friends' voting scores. Hell, you can even check the voting scores of New York City celebrities. For example, Sarah Jessica Parker scores a 6.7. Carrie Bradshaw would be so proud! With a 1.1, Woody Allen proves once again to be a poor role-model. Al Franken rates a 6.7 and Howard Stern gets a 7.5. Howard Stern beats Al Franken?

Visit LegalizeVotes. Check out my poor voting score. But most importantly, get off your ass and vote on Tuesday, September 13!
