He's an Orthodox Jewish Reggae singer that got his start performing in the parking lot at Phish shows, but don't call him a gimmick. Matisyahu's recent accomplishments include a co-headlining spot at the recent Reggae Carifest on Randall's Island and a sold-out show at Irving Plaza. Thursday night he'll pack Webster Hall. Phish fans who can't get a ticket should consider Benevento Russo Duo at Bowery Ballroom instead.
"Alligator, the second album from The National, is an unabashedly dynamic record (stream it). The beats are propulsive, the guitars vary from clean and incisive to ragged and dripping, piano haunts the corners, strings cling to the melodies like moss, boy/girl harmonies arrive unexpectedly, the lyrics are clever, obtuse, metaphoric character studies of lives misjudged and decisions reflected on with regret." [Stylus] Clap Your Hands Say Yeah open the shows at Warsaw on Wednesday and Bowery Ballroom on Friday. Make sure you stay for the National.
"Seu Jorge (b. June 8, 1970) is a Brazilian musician and actor. He appeared in the critically acclaimed movie City of God, and then played Pele Dos Santos in Wes Anderson's The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, for which he provided much of the soundtrack in the form of Portuguese covers of David Bowie classics." [Wikipedia] Jorge starts a two night run at Bowery Ballroom Sunday night.
And now the day by day...
Tuesday - 6th
"Napalm Death and Obituary were the dominant forces of the late 80's - early 90's death metal scene and their re-emergence on the same bill is a dream come true for metalheads young and old. I would say, abstractly, that they are the Who and Led Zeppelin of Death Metal." [Jeffrey] (@ BB Kings)
"Tonight's just as good as any other Tuesday night at Nublu, except for you get the added bonus of helping out some folks in New Orleans by paying to get in the door. Nearly all of the proceeds will go directly to folks who are stranded, homeless and jobless residents of the Big Easy. Even some of the money you spend at the bar will go to the cause." NOUVELLE VAGUE

Saturday - 10th
"Nouvelle vague is the French term for "new wave." Nouvelle Vague is a band whose sound connotes French life and the nonconformist ideals of the 1960s and 1970s. The melodies describe a carefree life of taking long walks on the countryside, swimming in the ocean, and eating and drinking to the heart’s content.
Nouvelle Vague’s self-titled album is filled with cover songs of the post-punk and alternative eras from bands like The Clash and Modern English. The opening song “Love Will Wear Us Apart” is a cover of Joy Division, but resembles nothing like Joy Division. What Nouvelle Vague does is dissemble the songs, add a smile to each and the result are songs that enhance the lyrics and moods. It wasn’t until the 10th track, “I Melt With You,” that I realized that all of the songs were covers." [Blogcritics] (@ Joe's Pub, afterparty @ Scenic)

What did we miss?

I'll agree with the "stick around for the National" comment. I'm shocked they don't have a bigger buzz around them. Their music is absolutely fantastic and Alligator (their current album) is virtually flawless. It's certainly my favorite album of the year. It'll be an incredible show with them following Clap Your Hands Say Yeah (my number 2 favorite).
just wanted to third the vote for the national. alligator is an excellent album, i cant wait to see them on friday.
