Groundbreaking on the World Trade Center Transit Hub Today

Today, the Port Authority will break ground on the new transit hub at the World Trade Center. Gothamist is especially excited because the structure is the gloriously ethereal design by Santiago Calatrava, and we actually can imagine a day when it will be completed (by the end of 2009, according to estimates), versus the slow, stop-start nature of the Freedom Tower. Politicians will be converging on Church Street today, as this groundbreaking comes close the election and does seem more tangible than the cornerstone at Ground Zero. See more pictures and video of the transit hub design at Calatrava's website.

With the anniversary of September 11, 2001 less than a week away, expect to see more and more stories about the event and what progress has been made since then. Newsday looks at the poltiical clout of September 11 victims' families which remains powerful.

Hola, mi amado Santiago, mi referencia, mi faro urbano. Gracias New York, gracias Santiago.

Calatrava should have been chosen to design the main building. His recent designs for towers in Chicago and Sweden show that he was up to the task.

Finally, this project is going to start. Long overdue. Now if only we could get the tower built?
