Newsday Cuts 45 Jobs From City Edition

2005_09_newsday.jpgWith rumored yesterday, it's true: Newsday is scaling back its city edition, with 45 jobs being cut. Gothamist is sad to hear this because we've always thought that Newsday was underrated. Sure, the Daily News and NY Post are great for its hysteria and dogged crime reporting, and the NY Times is the NY Times. But Newsday's city reporting is straightforward and thorough, with hysteria coming from its columnists. Our favorite areas of Newsday are its transit and political coverage, and unsurprisingly, it has fantastic Queens coverage. We hope the city edition manages to continue on!

So you praise Newsday above, but now you're calling it 'boring'? News is supposed to be thorough and though-provoking, not necessarily 'fun'. But i guess exciting, flashy 'news' is what people with short attention spans like. no wonder Newsday is cutting its staff.

Their covers are fine, but relatively speaking, boring. There's no room for a "Gephardt as VP" kind of mistake. The NY Post and Daily News have perfected the art of cover as isane zeitgeist... I'd wager to say you see the Post and Daily News style tabloid covers mentioned and mimicked more than other papers.

How many times have we've seen Newsday covers on Gothamist, compared to the Post or the Daily News?
