Mayor B Punks Out

2005_08_mayorcbgb.jpgOkay, Mayor Bloomberg is really not actually punk at heart, as he's a stickler for the "rules" or making up rules when it comes to smoking or being noisy or graffiti... but Gothamist got a kick out of the mayor holding up this Save CBGB's shirt. It's like he didn't want to put it on because suits are much more comfy! But Mayor B did say, "CBGB, it's a great New York City institution -- it's more than just another club. We are trying to bring both sides together. ... It's part of our culture. They bring a lot of business here. I don't think they belong any place else other than New York City." In other words, "I want to be re-elected with even the aging hippies and hipster haters loving me." The issue for CBGB's is that their landlord, the Bowery Residents' Committee, wants to increase rent over 100%, from $19,000 to $41,000.

And today, at 3PM in Washington Square Park, is the free Save CBGB's concert with Blondie, Bouncing Souls, Institute with Gavin Rossdale, Chestfield Kings, The Charms and others. No word on whether the Mayor will be there.

AM New York, or whatever that free paper that you get in the subways is called said that members of Talking Heads were going to be performing. Anyone know anything about that?

Bloomberg is full of of it. If he really cared about ANY club in New York, he wouldn't have supported a proposal that would cause the closure of nightclubs and bars at 1am (click the link to read about it). It didn't go through yet, but he most likely will push for it if he's re-elected. Not only that, he wants to impose fines for loud music. If you don't think he'll do it, nobody thought he'd ban smoking a few years ago. Vote him out of office, for the love of god.

i actually like the smoking ban - not at first, but everytime i go to another city like Chicago, I realize how good it is

According to AM New York, Bloomberg has never actually been inside of CBGB at all.

Wow. If bars closed at 1AM, my life might actually improve.

When a landlord tries to double the rent it indicates that they are constructively trying to evict the tenent in order to sell the land to a developer for a big money payout. Mike and councilwoman Margarita Lopez need to mediate the dispute and get Muzzy and the BRC to lighten up. If Muzzy is successfull in evicting a longtime tenant I don't understand how he thinks his neighbors will support the BRC.

Pugsley, I admire your passion but at the same time you need to wonder where Bloomberg's true alligences are. Under Mike Bloomberg many bars and restaurants have closed down due to excessively restrictive fines. Tons of other historic places in NYC have disappeared under Bloomberg's reign. Not to mention his hellbent desire to build stadiums and questionable silence as far as building the new Penn Station goes.

My gut tells me that he's 'making nice' publically for political reasons. Makes him look good. But I doubt he's spending any actual time doing anything productive to help CBGBs in any way.

And if he was indeed doing work to help CBGBs it would be great in this one case, but a slap in the face of all of the other places he's shunned and scolded over the years.

Jack is right--Bloomberg is partially responsible for CBGB's situation. The highest property tax hike in the entire history of New York came from Bloomberg's pen.

And Bloomberg's plan to effectively have bars to close at 1 AM is just the icing on the cake.

So let me get this straight, you think bloomberg shouldn't help mediate a resolution to the dispute because that would more closely adhere to your stereotypes and relieve your cognitive dissonence. good strategy.

Whatever. If you'd pull your head out of your pugsley you'd realize the reason why rents in this city are up and why it's hard for ANY bar--let alone CBGBs--survive in this city is partially because of the Bloomberg administration's desire to make this city as tourist friendly as possible.

Talk to tons of bar owners and others who have had to deal with nonsense like the ridiculous cabaret laws and such and you'd realize that Mike Bloomberg defending CBGBs is hillariously hypocritical.

You also need to question why Bloomberg allowed NYU to tear down the Palladium and the Bottom Line but is somehow 'passionate' about CBGBs. Could it be that NYU somehow has a golden ticket to do as they wish in the Village, but somehow others--like the BRC--are simply evil?

This whole CBGBs issue is absurdly hillarious at this point.

Jack - maybe you should call up Mike's office and suggest that he roll back the cabaret laws if you're so concerned about it. It would probably be more effective than you're "Care Bears" style posturing. I always knew that series was a poor influence.

Great idea pugsley, thanks.

Pugsley, Bloomberg already addressed the cabaret license, but he attached the Night Club Licence proposal to it as a condition. In essence, he exchanges the right to dance for a limitation to stay open past 1AM or to have "audible" noice eminating from a club. Bloomberg is just as bad, if not worse than, as Giuliani to the nightclub industry. And it trickles down to other industries as well. One aspect of people wanting to live and work in NYC is the active night scene. With a dead night scene, top talent will look to other more attractive (and affordable) cities to live and work in.
