Democrats Can't Catch a Break From the Polls

The NY Times paired their article, "Many Democrats Prefer Bloomberg, Poll Finds," with group photo op with all four Democratic candidates. The photograph by Librado Romero catches them in the middle of a press conference after touring distressed buildings, and they look out of sorts. Sure, they are each doing something - Anthony Weiner (holding an adorable moppet - rule #1 of politics - find a child to pose with if you don't have any!) and C. Virginia Fields is are both looking to the side, while Gifford Miller is looking down and Fernando Ferrer furrows his brow as he speaks - but together, it's a tableau that speaks a thousand words. Ferrer is in the center, as the frontrunner, but there's crowding with the others, and it's hard to get a read on whether any one of them can make it happen.

The article goes on to show that while Ferrer leads Fields, Miller and Weiner, he still may not have the 40% of the vote he'll need to avoid a run off, especially since voter turnout for the primary seems low. The two areas where Bloomberg may be vulnerable will be housing (for lower and middle class residents) and education, which is why the Democrats have been speaking to those points, but the constant problem still is that none of them have much of an impression on voters. If you are a registered Democrat, you have a good shot of shaping this year's election if you vote on September 13. Here are the candidates' websites: Fernando Ferrer, C. Virginia Fields, Gifford Miller and Anthony Weiner. The NY Times and Newsday have extensive sites for local politics: The Times' Metro Campaigns and Newsday's Race for City Hall. And Emily Farris lets us know she's Mayoroke, which will have Miller and candidates like Norman Siegel, Scott Stringer, Carlos Manzano, Bill Perkins, Eric Cesnik, etc., singing in order to give their stump speeches. Gothamist predicts the night will devolve into drinking games and betting city property!

    simple points:

    1.

Ferrer is a total charlatan, so it doesn't matter what he says.

EX: in my platform, I agreed to SIGN a contract guaranteeing my promises. Ask any candidate to do this.

Would you hire a plumber but allow him to change all of his promises?

So why do we tolerate this from pols??

    2.

ALL of Freddy's fake proposals are easy to fund.

Take a look at my 100 INNOVATIONS FOR NYC at MayorBrodeur.org and you'll see actual SPECIFICS about financing proposals.

NYC has over $10 BILLION of total fat in the budget each year.

Plus, most of my proposals EARN us money, like Free Subways, which, in fact, SAVES us over $300 million a year.

    Got that?

    it doesn't cost a penny.

    It saves millions.

    Every 12 months.

Take a look if you doubt me.

  • So much anti-Republicanism here? Geez, get the facts right. I'm a Republican, financially conservative, but for progress. My point here: I'll take Bloomberg over Ferrer any day of the week. Ferrer would promise you everything; Bloomberg can take being disliked. Everyone criticizes the Repupublicans but it's only the Democrats who do the complaining and the exit polls. Republicans tend to be quiet.

Everyone critiziing Bloombergs cuts: Oh, so you'd rather run the city back into a depression by overspending? Reality is if we didn't make the cuts you criticize you'd be complaining about the effects of not doing those cuts. Bloomberg doesn't care about your criticism. He knows he can't win your opinions because he has to make the hard choices for the city.

Ferrer will tell you all the evil cuts Bloomberg has made...Ferrer gets elected and he'll do the same.

Whatever...I expect all the usual complaints to continue. It's the popular thing to do.

September 11th destroyed the World Trade Center, and killed all of the people inside of it. Giuliani led the city. Giuliani cleaned most of the debris up. Giuliani set all of that up. Bloomberg didn't start his term yet.

What did Bloomberg do about 9/11? There's still a big ass gaping hole at ground zero. Bloomberg would've had the west side stadium built before they even laid down the first brick of the new WTC.

New York's economy took a big hit after 9/11; everyone was financially hurting. What did Bloomie do? Bloomberg raised property taxes by double digits. Then Bloomberg brought in Mr. Markus, who has the honor of raising rent increases to the highest in city history.

Now there's more bums out on the streets since the Great Depression, and rents are priced the highest in the city's history, and there's thousands fewer cops now than a few years ago, the poverty level has risen, fewer new jobs are opening up, so how the hell is this doing a good job?

Bloomberg apologists seem to have the same glazed-over automatic responses to everything.

All sizzle but no meat. Where's the beef, man? Are you saying that rents are low?

The fact that you are completely forgetting/underestimating how bad New York City was off after Sep 11, is a prime example of how good a job Bloomberg has done.

  • truthhurts

i'm not talking about whether the cuts were good or bad, I'm talking about what a democrat would do rather than what a republican would do given the same situation. dems would simply raise taxes. repubs would simply make cuts. but the mayor cut everything _and_ raised taxes. so he's more like the worst of both parties. so we're getting fucked in the pocket while we're simulataneously getting less from our city. and wasn't it widely reported that NYC didn't get all of the 9/11 funding that was promised? we're paying for it ourselves. and I dont remember ever hearing the mayor complain to the federal government about it.

  • hurtsuntruth

How was the city to get out of the spectacualr budget deficits from Sep 11 without cuts? No one denies a similar recovery would have been impossible without cuts. He has done a superb job of fiscal responsibility and getting the city back on track. How quickly some people forget.

  • truthhurts

gifthorse, i was looking up information at the city council.

Mayor Michael r. bloomberg cut $7.3M from parks, $28.6M from libraries, $2M from sanitation, $2.4M from AIDS education, $13.1M from mental health and substance abuse programs, $670K from the emergency food assistance program, $2.8M from the Infant Mortality Reduction Initiative, $5.3M from child health clinics, $11.5M from the arts, and $7M from CUNY scholarship program, and that is just the beginning.

His cuts are the hallmark of a republican.

  • Gift Horse

You horse-blinders "down the line" folks here are looking a gift horse in the mouth - a democrat, in Republican clothing, who holds democrat values. Why are you shooting yourselves in the foot and saying nasty things about Mike Bloomberg? Honestly, he's a good guy, don't hurt other dems (and repubs) who understand what's going on here. If you want to learn what he believes in, READ HIS AUTOBIOGRAPHY. Then post here with your thoughts. Party != Person.

  • Bayou Billy

Republicans were the ones who reduced funding for the reinforcement of the levee system in New Orleans. And now look what happened. Still think political parties don't matter?

  • REALITY CHECK

NYers are smart enough to vote for the best candidate regardless of party affiliation.

These "smart New Yorkers" gave us Giuliani.

  • sp

omg, I will vote Dem down the ticket because I oppose the Republican agenda, plain and simple.

  • Why Are Democrats Ignoring The

    Please take your propoganda elsewhere.

You know something? I give up. I'm serious. I'm giving up.

If you call factual, easily corroborated points "propaganda," then all hope is lost. If you're too lazy to look up issues on Google, forget it. If you don't even pick up the paper to see what's really going on in New York, this town is done for. Forget everything. I'm throwing in the towel. You win. Vote based on mailers and ads on the boob tube, not your head. Vote based on the fact that you think New York still has soul. Because believe me, New York is a sterilized joke because of the idiot leaders we pick.

Some people up here agreed with some of the corroborated facts I've brought up. But alas, it's "propaganda."

Pat yourself on the back. Enjoy your red meat, apple pie and high-definition television. I'm going to roll over and sleep now, just like all of the other Democrats.

    THE END.

  • AUDREY FOR MAYOR

    Audrey Silk for Mayor!

    Audrey Silk for Mayor!

  • Why Are Democrats Ignoring The

    PS--what are those holes? I don't see truck-sized holes. And who's "we"?

  • Why Are Democrats Ignoring The

It's not bloomberg's fault specificially for the upward trajectory in rents per se, but it IS his fault for doing nothing to slow or reverse the rise in rents. And yes, it's in his power...

    The Urstadt Law

Bloomberg has not repealed it, and is AGAINST repealing it. He has no clue. Maybe bloomie's the one smoking the weed you were talking about.

  • reality

You are all talk. Just like Ferrer and Miller.

We've poked enough holes in your arguements against the Mayor to let a truck through. NYers are smart enough to vote for the best candidate regardless of party affiliation.

  • Go Away

    Please take your propoganda elsewhere.

  • Why Are Democrats Ignoring The

The underlying meaning was that Bloomberg stood aside, fully knowing that the Republicans were unfriendly to New York's needs. The Dems didn't screw us like the Republicans did.

Sure it wasn't Bloomberg's fault. But that doesn't change the fact that he was passive. I'd rather have a tough mayor who stands up for New Yorkers and won't applause and bend over for the likes of George W and Karl Rove.

  • reality

"Bloomberg has made this city very hostile for the middle class. Many of my longtime New Yorker friends are seriously thinking about moving out because they feel it's not worth it to stay. Rents have risen higher than income. Take a look around. It's been four years. Rents are out of control."

Blame the Mayor for increase in property value? Blame the Mayor for free open market? You obviously have no clue. Go back to you little East Village room and smoke some more bad pot. It just might clear your head up.

  • >>Bloomberg is a man who let hundreds of Republicans trample all over NYC

Bloomberg gets knocked for NYC's hosting of the RNC, but he also bid for the 2004 Democratic National Convention; NYC was one of the finalists.
