One Last Cigarette

LAist editor Jason Toney was in town, and he captured this photograph of one of the city's fixtures. And some thoughtful passer-by made sure the bloated rat wouldn't be lonely on the street until the Department of Sanitation swept him up. Even though Gothamist is not always excited to see a rat, we have to say this is a pretty great, if gross, picture.

Gothamist loves the book Rats by Robert Sullivan. And is this a subversive way of thanking Mayor Bloomberg for the smoking ban? Anyway, this photo can be found on the Gothamist stream on Flickr; add your NYC life photos to it!

hey hookah, only one problem with your argument - it's not coming from the right. the left has always made it a point of telling us what's good or bad for us, as long as it's politically correct - screw your rights!

  • 2 Things:

    1) You couldn't pay me enough to pry open the mouth of a dead rat to jam a cig butt in its maw, even for a gag pic.

    2) Restaurants can do what I saw in the International Lounge in Beijing airport: Create a tiny 6x8 room where you addicts can puff away in ventilated cancer-ridden joy. They even had a window so I could peer in and view the future lung-lesioned dead.

Kojak, you should suck on a lollypop instead, it's better for you.

Smoking is bad for you as they say, and they'll make it as difficult as possible for you to smoke anytime, anywhere. Even if the health of people around you wasn’t an issue, they'd ban it in restaurants anyway.

But they can’t keep me away from my Cubans or 420. Fuck em

    Fight the Power.

The fact that people are still debating the smoking ban 2 1/2 years after it started means that it's still in people's minds. Why couldn't there be a compromise? Such as a machine-ventilated smoking room that employees don't enter? This means that the employees are protected, but we can be humane to smokers when there's a sub-zero wind chill in the deep of winter. Contrary to what the Puritanical Right tells you, smokers are people, too.

More importantly, who were you addressing before you provoked some responses, meesalikeu? The rat?

"rights" ? they have the right to be better actors so they don't have to wait tables anymore.

  • Conan the Librarian

"It's not a smoking ban. it's an enforcement of bar/restaurant workers and customers health rights."

They have no rights. As long as I put down the tip, Im the one who makes the rules.

Hey that's the rat that flashed me on the subway!

  • Jason was just jealous that LA rats can't smoke anymore on the beaches of Santa Monica.

  • meesalikeu

it's not a smoking ban. it's an enforcement of bar/restaurant workers and customers health rights. still whining about this now universally accepted situation are ya? ha. sounds like the majority of us before the enforcement.

  • alex

I know that fat rat. He/She/It was near the corner of 13th Street and 2nd Ave. Almost stepped on him/her/it.

  • Jen W

It's part of decomposition. Bacteria consume the body, but their metabolic processes release gases, causing bloating. Neat, huh?

  • guh

why IS that rat so fat? is its corpse expanding in some rigor mortis type decay process? did it die of a heart-attack, or morbidly obesity?

  • Kojak

Definitely a slow news day today...

    In NY anyway
