Will August Make the Top Ten List?

trophy.jpgIn a comment on our most recent weather post Michael mentioned that he heard we were on track to the warmest August ever. Gothamist took a quick look at the numbers and saw that we will be close to the warmest August ever and one of the ten warmest months since records began in Central Park since 1869.

The ten warmest months ever are:

July 1999 – 81.4 degrees
July 1955 – 80.9
Aug 1980/July 1950 – 80.3
July 1993 – 80.2
July 1908 – 79.8
July 1949 – 79.6
July 1983 – 79.5
July 1994 – 79.4
July 1980 and 1988 – 79.3

Through yesterday the average temperature for this month is 80.1 degrees. Using the National Weather Service forecasts Gothamist calculates that August's average temperature will wind up around 79.2. That would put this month as the 12th warmest ever of any month and the 2nd warmest August. Temperatures for the rest of the month would have to be slightly greater than those forecasted for us to break the top ten, and much warmer than predicted to set the August record.

Expect the humidity and cloudiness to increase as the weekend progresses. By the middle of next week we may get some rain depending on the path of Hurricane Katrina's remnants.

and here i thought august was always the worst.

must be the humidity.

After reading your post I found myself rooting for way above average temperatures the rest of the month, just to break a record. Then I got ahold of myself.

Thanks for clearing that up.

Believe me, Niagara County hasn't been any better. My sister keeps telling me, she loooooves the heat and humidity-she works part time, in AC, has central AC in her house, and has a pool. I work in a factory, make good money, yeah, have all the overtime I can take and more, true...but since May, I think the lowest its been in my department, has been 105, the highest, 125. Usually, its around 110. We've sent 12 people to the hospital with heat exhaustion since June, and man, beleive me, working in this heat, can make you feel like crap. There is just not enough water to drink-I think your body absorbs it, as soon as it hits your mouth, so you never even get a chance to sweat it out. Not to be gross, but a lot of days, you suddenly realize, you haven't had to piss, since you left the house, 6 hours before. And the boss expects us to work at the same pace we work at, in January!

I have to win the lotto. Can anyone in any of the NYC boroughs, give me a break, and NOT hit the lotto jackpot, please? Its been ages, since you guys let one of us win a few million! Its MY turn, to win the lotto!
