Subway Death Turns Out To Be Murder

Last May, when Enrique Soriano's body was found beneath a 6 train at the Whitlock Avenue station in the Bronx, the police ruled it an accident or even a suicide. Now the ME's office says Soriano was assaulted and possibly pushed. Even though Soriano had been taking antidepressants, his family never believed he committed suicide because the gold chain and crucifix he wore were missing from his body. Wife Rosa Soriano told the NY Times that when her husband made his daily call to her from the subway platform at 3:20AM (he was on his way to his job at LaGuardia Airport as a baggage handler), he mentioned there were three men on the platform, which was unusual. A neighbor added that the Whitlock station was poorly lit and lacked police patrols, but it makes Gothamist wonder about other safety issues when taking the subway in the wee hours. What can you do if you're on an elevated platform, and the token booth in downstairs? Perhaps there should be a system where people can wait downstairs in a more safe area, and the trains will wait for people go upstairs. We know, wishful thinking.

3 of the 4 Goetz shot were age 19.5, and one was just 18. Is kids an appropriate term, or is thugs more appropriate; after all its safe to call Goetz a vigilante. What is your source of Goetz's claim that his racism was New York's fault? Ever consider prosecutorial misconduct? But liberals don't do that, only bad Republicans. See Wikepedia.com for accurate information.

I'm not going to respond to your comments at legnth, I just want to say that we live in a vry complex world where no one is innocent. It was stupid of me to claim otherwise earlier, so i apologize for that, and for engaging in a really idiotic personal attack. I freely admit that I am a dumbass.) I wish very much that the woman had never been raped, but what Goetz did was and is not commendable.

  • b

Goetz was targeted (and yes, he was targeted) by these f**ks because he was white, skinny, and a "four eyed" geek. You think those guys weren't racists?

If a bullet in the brain would have prevented that girl from being raped by that one guy later on, it would have been justified. Just ask her.

Now go back to your little box.

Not a wasp, that link is pretty biased, and while i may have fucked up the details (I was less than 10 years old when all that went down, and i lived in Philadelphia at the time, so i apologize for the innacuracies.

but Goetz was a racist (he claimed, in fact, that his racism was New York's fault.) Shooting those kids was not justified, putting Cabey in a wheelchair for the rest of his life is horriffic, and Goetz's excuse for saying racist shit - that he was on drugs at the time and not in control of his mouth, stinks worse than the bags of garbage the rats used to play in at my station every morning in high school. However reprehensible the actions of the people Goetz shot were then and since, claiming that they, or anyone, don't deserve to live is pretty f**ked up.

Zach - what suburb were you living in when Goetz went to trial????

As for the pieces of human trash Goetz shot...

All of the youths have committed serious crimes in the time since the shooting except for Cabey, who remains paralyzed. James Ramseur later brutally raped, sodomized, beat, and robbed a pregnant nineteen year-old. He was convicted.

The only mistake Bernie made was not killing them all. That would have been a benifit to society.

Defend those "victims" all you want, but it does not change the fact they were far from innocent and are perfect examples of human filth who just happend to be black.

But, I guess in these oh so PC days being black absolves a person of being a piece of shit crimminal even if that person IS a criminal, because it is a sterotype.

ha ha, a well-bred Ivy League WASP kid has to actually face one of the people he talks so much about supporting! and "understanding, maan"

It reminds me of that Mad TV sketch where they always have that one ridiculously white guy on the show. They definitely exist, and here's a fun example of one.

"Perhaps there should be a system where people can wait downstairs in a more safe area, and the trains will wait for people go upstairs"

something like that already in some stations. for example, the prospect park station for B and Q has some benches near the booth and then a sound will come on the speakers when a train is approaching, giving enough time to go downstairs. Same thing at nostrand av on A,C line.

  • zach

i hadn't heard about that. Probably wasn't Cabey, the one he paralyzed when he shot him again.

  • Brightliner

I guess all Gothamist can do is cross its fingers and hope the MTA moves a lot faster procuring and installing the new cameras.

  • john

zach, didn't one of those kids get convicted for brutally raping, sodoming, beating, and robbing a pregnant nineteen year-old

  • b

yes, and we all know that those kids became model citizens after the shooting

-anyways, if you're going to be taking the subway late at night, especially in the east bronx, you better be able to take care of yourself. My cousin who still lives up there has to carry razors with him.

  • zach

right, they tried to mug him (and i guess it was actually in the car not on the platform, mea culpa.) Doesn't justify under any circumstances shooting four kids, whether or not they were, as he claimed "menacing him with screwdrivers." Only reason Goetz isn't still in jail is because he's white and his juror played on some very racist fears about the criminality of working-class black youth.

  • b

    1. innocent kids? - they were far from innocent.

    2. i'm puerto rican, born and raised in the Bronx

    3. if you know the neighborhood around the Whitlock Avenue station, it's wishful thinking that there's ever going to be cops around to protect you

  • Shoot innocent kids for standing on subway platforms while black? Great idea, "b." Now please go back to whatever apartheid suburb you SUVed out of.

  • b

    do what Bernhard Goetz did
