The MTA is looking for cell phone providers to bid on developing a cell phone system in the subways. The NY Times has an extensive article about the RFP; Gothamist's favorite part is "The authority wants a company or a consortium to design, build, operate and maintain the system - at no cost to the authority." Of course the MTA doesn't want to have to deal with building it - the agency has enough problems with the trains! There's also some great detail on other cell phone-uage-in-subways, like how the winning provider would have to allow other companies to use the network (the DC Metro has Verizon, which means Sprint users roam and Cingular and T-Mobile are locked out), as well as the pros and cons of the MTA asking a private company to develop the network. While the MTA might be missing out on potential money it could make by developing its own network, Gothamist has to say having an outside party do the job might be the only way the project gets off the ground.
The possibility of using cell phones underground leads to many questions: Will cell phone kiosks start popping up underground? Will illegal vendors peddling their wares now include ones selling cell phone tchotchkes? Will the kids "selling" M&Ms for their school basketball teams be unwitting victims of straphangers yapping on the cell phones? Will there be even more cell phone thefts? And yes, our ears, our ears! We'll be subjected to those travelogues we hear on surface trains and as soon planes land, "Yeah, I just landed...wanted to see what was up... yeah, the flight was okay..."

Can't you detonate a bomb using a cell phone? Maybe the MTA would want to rethink this idea...
you don't need phone service to detonate a bomb. all you need is the alarm function. london can attest to that.
I heard yesterday on NPR that service would only be available on all platforms, not on the train itself. Also, cell service is available on any above-ground train. I've been annoyed once or twice, but really, it hasn't ruined my life or anything. Also, you can detonate a bomb using a timer/stopwatch on a cellphone, no service required, so it wouldn't really make a difference. Personally, I think we should have service on platforms since those f-ing pay phones never work.
I think the cell phones should only be able to call 911 in the subway. Otherwise there will be non-stop fatheads blubbering on inches away from you. Jen captured the essence of the conversations with the "I just landed" type chat. The most irritating to me are the Location Announcers who specialize in this sort of chat - "hello?... I'm on the train. We just passed west fourth street, coming up to union square. I'm going up to the 34th street...." They can have lengthy conversations that just confirm their location in the world, yet have absolutely no content. Who are the passive blobs on the other end, who allow the Location Announcer to blubber on at length without interrupting or hanging up on them? Another mystery of the times.
Honestly, I see it as not much of a big deal, because without the service, the train is just as loud with people yelling across the car. It's just one of those thing you DEAL WITH, living a a large city and all.
