SUV Jumps Midtown Curb

2005_08_pedestrianshit.jpg

Michael Cosentino let us know that there was a big accident with a car jumping a curb at Broadway between 39th and 40th Streets. There are news vans out there, but none of the local news channels have any reports yet (WNBC has a flashing ticker, but only says there are many pedestrian injuries). Did an SUV run amok when native New Yorkers were jaywalking? Or did a tourist wander in the street to cause the chaos? Was the driver distracted by a Times Square billboard? Or was it an out-of-towner with one handing holding a cell phone, which is in violation of state law? At any rate, we hope the injuries are not life-threatening. It's also unclear whether or not other pedestrians tried to beat the driver or any of the SUV's passengers as they did in an incident last October.

Jen,
What type of ad job allows you time to post so often? Not to mention being an part time editor.

Proving once again that only black SUVs can jump, or does that maxim only relate to the skin color of the driver?

Heard on 1010 WINS: driver in Honda was being stopped for some traffic violation (?) by NYPD officer and when asked to show license & registration, an envelope/pouch fell out of the car, containing some white powder (drugs, no doubt). When this happened, the driver, with door still open, mashed on the accelerator and officer grabbed onto the door, wrestling with the driver for keys (to shutoff the engine). Finally after plowing into some office people eating lunch outside 1411 Broadway the NYPD officer was able to get the car stopped. 6 pedestrians hit and the NYPD officer (Lieutenant) injured as well.

Does anyone know what those four helicopters are hovering over the west side for?

they've been there since about 4:15pm

helicopters might be bc of this:

PATH - 33 St. SERVICE SUSPENDED IN BOTH DIRECTIONS

PATH has suspended all service between 33rd Street and Journal Square and between 33rd Street and Hoboken until further notice due to a potential building collapse at 500 Hudson Street in the vicinity of the Christopher Street Station.

PATH will be running service from WTC to Newark and from WTC to Hoboken.

i hate yuppies, even driving jeeps.

Yep, was just at the corner of Christopher and Hudson, they have the whole intersection blocked off. They're worried 500 Hudson St. will collapse, the outside seems to be bulging and cracking. The PATH tunnels go right under Christopher St., so any shaking would obviously be dangerous to the building.
