Maybe the Mets needed Snake Plissken on their side Thursday night, because their lineup sure wasn’t getting it done. Twenty-two year old Zach Duke stifled the Mets for seven innings allowing only two hits and one walk while striking out five in the Pirates’ 5-0 victory.
Carlos Beltran seems to have reinvented himself since his horrific collision. Thursday night, Beltran reached base three times, had two hits and stole a base. Perhaps a broken facial bone was what he needed to turn his season around. Maybe it will work for Mike Piazza when he returns sometime this weekend.
The Mets will now have three games against the Nationals at Shea before heading out west to face Arizona and San Francisco. Despite being in last place in the National League East, the Mets are still only three games out of the wild card and they won’t have to face Duke again until 2006.

Don't get ahead of yourself on Beltran. Of his "three times on base" one was a lazy fly ball that hit Eldred in the glove (E9) and another was a full swing that barely nicked the ball and it died on the infield before rolling foul. He stole third with ease but I don't think Duke has learned to hold runners on yet. Beltran was willing to run on him all game. I also think he pulled up on a warning track fly ball because of his fractured face.
