Police have discovered that four of the six widely publicized overdose victims took cocaine as well as heroin, which could change suspicions that there's tainted heroin into questions about whether there's tainted heroin or the popularity of doing speedballs. The NY Times talks to and photographs addicts in Tompkins Square Park. And they say the East Village is gentrified? One caption reads:
He calls himself L.E.S. (for Lower East Side) Jewels. He says that he has overdosed four times in the last week and that a tainted batch of heroin could be the reason.Jewels explains that some people who overdose but live think "it means the dope is good. It means they have more tolerance for the stuff." Well, that's certainly one kind of logic. Another complains that the other junkies' deaths didn't become news until the two 18 year-old girls' deaths last week. Yes, blame the news!

Looks like another one of those East Village "Fashion Emergencies". Call Stephen Cojocaru! Or Frank DeCaro, for that matter. I like how there's the one straight edge street guy in the article. Now that's alternative.
My Favorite quote from the NY Times article:
...
We live in such a Bizarre Age.
Is it just me or does "L.E.S. Jewels" resemble Kid Rock??
Four times in the past week? And that doesn't tell him anything?!?! There's a fine line between being an addict and just being an idiot and I think this wackdoo is firmly on the idot side of that line.
"a fine line between being an addict and just being an idiot"
they're kind of the same, no?
Why blame the news? Maybe because its never newsworthy til someone cute and/or white dies.....
after reading the following article, i can't really rely on the times for it's drug beat writers:
http://peele.net/lib/overdose.html
well, how newsworthy is it if a long-time smoker dies of lung cancer? someone who's obese for a long period of time who dies of heart disease? etc.
it is somewhat more newsworthy when someone who's 18, female, and "not of that type" dies. and water is wet. etc.
holmes, you should also check's Slate coverage of the reporting about these supposedly "drug overdoses." It seems like some of this is also the result of subpar reporting.

It's more newsworthy because it was two young attractive college girls who overdosed. Staggering, slobbering junkies who have abandoned the hope of being a contributing member of society are expected to overdose and eventually die. Is it right that these girls' identities make it more newsworthy or is it indicative of our shallowness and ability to cast off undesirables as unimportant....?? That's a question you have to ask yourself. I personally, at the risk of appearing callous and judgemental, think we lost more from these 2 girls leaving our planet than if L.E.S. Jewels had OD'd. That said, however, these girls were still extremely misguided and took their little L.E.S. fantasy a little farther than they should have. R.I.P.
thinking that a couple of 18 year olds are gonna contribute to the good of humanity doesn't seem callous... that's alot more optimistic than i am.
no john...being an addict doesn't make one an idiot...just an addict. It is thinking like yours that is part of the reason people like me used to use heroin...to escape from the moronic thinking of people like yourself. Now, choosing to use herion is not a wise choice and i would not reccomend it to anyone...even you. One important thing to find out id if any of these people who died were drinking. Heroin+alcohol=bodies that stop breathing. Most likely this isn't tainted dope...that would be bad for buisness...it is probably really pure...which is problemtic for people with no experience and Junkies who have been clean for a short time or are dope sick.
i learned it from watching you, dad!
"is thinking like yours that is part of the reason people like me used to use heroin...to escape from the moronic thinking of people like yourself. "
Oh give me a fucking break. Yes, you're right - if people disagree with you, the logical response is to use heroin. Grow up and take some responsibility for your actions.
bob, I would use heroin if I had to deal with like you all day
andrea's friend, yeah I think that that was bob's point exactly... you know?-- the one you seemed to miss? Also: try proofreading.
"When will the day come when we can use these sub-humans as fuel?"
whatev to you you totally suck. Jewels is just as much a human being as you even if he's all fucked up. Anyway you're already using him as feul for your superiority complex. You don't know anything about him and what is driving him to destroy himself and you have no right to judge him. It's not people like you who "make" other people use drugs, but it is people like you who breed the ignorance that prevents junkies from getting the help they need for their disease.
And by the way none of you Gothamist readers or writers have a right to judge which human life is more valuable. Here's hoping that Jewels' comes around and gets some help for himself so he can be the man that his higher power meant him to be.
Jewels is a 2 timing motherfucker
maybe if Jewels recovers from his habit he can stop being such a 2 timing mother fucker . Donna says hi!!! Hi Jewels I see you're still at it!!!!
FUCK YOU JEWELS YOU ARE A FUCKING MOTHERFUCKER
HIS STYLE IS PROBABLY TEN TIMES BETTER THAN YOURS SO SHUT THE HELL UP.
Do you think that if Jewels gets a fancy education and a sweater from Neighborhoodies and a blog that maybe your attitude would be a little different?? I thought so.
Johnny and MT: I'm surprised, very surprised, that there are people so NAIVE and judgemental that they would declare on the internet that being a junkie is the same as being an idiot. It seems that it should be second nature to know that among any subset of people ( junkies or white people, whatever, however the net is thrown ), there will be people that are dopey, people that are lazy, people who are a little smarter or a lot more stupid. And any of them could be junkies. Not because they are stupid, lazy, or smart: because they are ILL.
Addiction is a mental, physical, and spiritual disease that is often precipitated by mental illness or trauma of some sort whether in childhood or later life, or both. People with mental illnesses are often looked down on and blamed. This is wrong-headed and often lethal . People who are ill shold never have to be ashamed.
You judged what you didn't know, and you'll be judged right back, by me at least: you are both naive idiots.
As for Homer the Fink: unless your comment is some kind of satire on fascism (which I hope it is), it is just downright scarey. I hope to god that you have no power in this world. FUCK YOU if you are not kidding.
. Jewels gave me a pair of shoes to wear and a place to stay and was a little kind to me when I needed it and I will always remember him for that and I don't think it's right to call him a waste or an idiot, or to judge him for the way that he looks or being a junkie.
Hey! Jewels, You look alot like the infamous Bobby Ebbs ,walkin' around the LES with that cane. Will visit ya' soon.Susan ,Johnny Danger says Hi!
