Will the real Neil Diamond please step forward?

The kings of (indie) rock n' roll converge on NYC this week. Each will attempt to outdo the other. Ben Gibbard impersonator Colin Meloy and his merry band of Decemberists return for their umpteenth NYC show since they first set foot here in May 2003. We aren't complaining. The Thursday night gig at the 5000 capacity Summerstage promises to be their biggest New York show yet, but Death Cab For Cutie (owners of the real Ben Gibbard) actually possess the headlining spot at this 'benefit' concert that sold out quickly months ago. And as if the lineup wasn't already an OC-themed wet dream, Canadian pop-rockers Stars follow up their performance in Prospect Park by also opening this show. . Find a ticket, sit outside the gate, or just wait for their next shows in October. The Decemberists are back for two nights at Webster Hall and Death Cab will be at Hammerstein Ballroom.
Is there an entry in the Guinness Book of World Records for "most sold out consecutive nights at Bowery Ballroom?" We'd have to research it, but the title may now belong to Sufjan Stevens whose recent indie Illinois-themed album created a strong enough buzz to land him on MTV and sell out five nights in a row at the 550 capacity Bowery (a shout out on the OC probably helped too). The marathon begins on Friday. Highlights of the series include San Diego legends Bunky as opener on Sunday and next Monday, and the not-yet-legal Smoosh as opener of the Friday show. Smoosh also headlines Knitting Factory on Wednesday.
While Sufjan works on the next 48 America-themed albums, Neil Diamond, forever in blue jeans, can revel in the over (approximately?) 50 records he already has to his name. And we're sure he won't sing blue while counting the money he earned this week by selling nearly 60,000 tickets to a three night run at Madison Square Garden (Friday, Saturday, and Sunday). Tickets are actually still available, though we believe even the cheap seats at cost will set you back more than a ticket on Craigslist will for the sold-out Bowery and Summerstage shows. Stay tuned for Diamond's new Rick Rubin produced album in November, and read why he is still cool after all these years.
And now the day by day...

"Like many bands lumped into the post-rock genre (Tortoise, the Rachels, Kinski), the music of Tarantula AD (the AD was added after a tiff about the moniker) isn’t easy to describe. The group has thrown lyrics to the wayside and decided to fuse John Coltrane with classical set-ups and distortion. Not exactly Phillip Glass, but something Phillip Glass would yearn for if he idolized the Decemberists’ mariner style of songwriting and Iggy Pop’s punk sensibilities." "stars like fleas is a band who deserve more attention than they've been getting. while several avant-folk artists such as the excellent akron/family and devendra banhart have been more widely discussed, stars like fleas have garnered some serious respect by setting themselves apart from the pack. their music draws extensively from jazz and experimental improvisation, yet utilizes and contains electronics that would put off most purists. "RebbeSoul is world beat and Jewish roots music on the cutting edge. A versatile musician with an innate gift for telling a story, RebbeSoul brings a new voice to the sometimes-stagnant realm of Jewish music. His records have struck a chord with young and old listeners alike, bringing his latest release to #1 on the CMJ (college radio) world music charts" [Joe's Pub]
"A fresh breeze from Knoxville, Tennessee (for the time being, he says), James Toth aka Wooden Wand plays somber folk with smoky, chicken-coop ambiance. Sticking with the basics, his unadorned sound consists of guitar and voice: Singing into your ear, he whispers and caws over splintery strums. Now and again, his voice lifts like a hillbilly choir or a candlelit revival presided over by David Crosby. He mumbles. He exorcises and laments. He goes Bill Callahan on us." [Pitchfork] (free @ The East River with other good bands)

What did we miss?

i think white stripes did 5 nights in a row a few years back ~ i could be mistaken. bowery ballroom trivia...
I still can't believe an act (Sufjan Stevens) that sings about Jesus is top of the indie charts...
Who would have thought a movie about the crucifixion would be #1 at the box office either? He's (Sufjan) a clever songwriter and the Jesus references aren't pushy at all. I personally am really looking forward to the show, and I don't love Jesus.
That's my point though; people went to see "Passion" for the story specifically about Jesus. People - for the most part - don't go to see Sufjan for his religious lyrics; they go for the music. I guess for me though this is an annoyance that turns me off. Maybe I'm too far in the devil's territory.
colin meloy as a... a... ben gibbard impersonator? i'm totally gonna rag on this on my blog you'll be sorry
where is your blog?
Mr. Vegan> Were you at the Silver Mt. Zion show over the weekend?
How the heck do you compile this? Someone should give you a medal. Or a full time job.
Well, he has more time since he never wastes it eating meat...
Yeah BV... you should definitely get a full time job...
