Two 18 year-old women collapsed and later died while partying at an East Houston Street apartment. So far, it seems that Mellie Nicole Carballo and Maria Pesantez may have died of overdoses. The Daily News says the two men they were with were ex-cons (with drug offenses) who deny they had given the girls drugs. The NY Times says that the girls' families were "two immigrant families who had worked hard to give the girls private-school educations and solid middle-class upbringings." Apparently Carballo had told her mother that she was staying with a friend for the weekend. The Post reports the men said they had been drinking with the girls during the day but then they all passed out, and when the girls remained unconscious by Friday night, they called 911. The Medical Examiner's office will have results of toxicology tests in ten days.

Damn tradegy, rebelious teenagers sneak out and then end up dying from overdoses. If I were a parent ( I don't see why I'd want to be on in the world we live in now ) this would be the kind of thing to put me in permanent therapy.
The sad thing is who do you blame? If the guys gave them the drugs, then they are partially to blame. But the girls and their reckless behavior is also to blame. It's such a shame that two young lives were lost, for no reason at all....
But the sad thing is this could have taken place in any time period. Kids sneak out, do drugs, then die.
At a family party not too long ago, someone was saying much the same, why would anyone want to have kids nowadays, plus, the kids that are here, have no respect, are violent, etc. My grandmother, age 91, said that her parents often said the same things....some things just don't change, I guess. So, what the hay. If you're physically and financially able..have the kids. And be a parent, and the rest of us will help you out here and there by telling you the great, and not so great things your kids are up to, when out of your sight.
