J-E-T-S! Queens! Queens! Queens!

2005_08_unisphere.jpgA New York football team in New York City? That's a good one! But it seems that Queens is trying to woo the NY Jets once more into building a stadium there. Queens Borough President Helen Marshall wrote a letter to the Jets, "A new Jets Stadium would complement the new Shea Stadium and the spectacular U.S. Tennis Center and make the borough a regional sports mecca," and the Jets will be meeting with various Queens officials on August 23. But the Jets are still working the New Jersey to share the new stadium at the Meadowlands with the Giants, plus has some time to reconsider its bid for the West Side! The upside to building a stadium in Queens is that it would be an easier commute for the Jets' Long Island fan base and we imagine the Jets might even get to call it "Jets Stadium," not to mention the legacy of the Namath years in Queens; the downside would be the cost - less than what a Manhattan stadium would cost, but still pricey. Whereas a shared stadium in NJ would be inexpensive, but the Jets would only have its name on an LED or LCD screen. City Councilman Jeffrey Meeks prefers a domed stadium, but Gothamist, though understanding a domed stadium would mean year-round revenue, thinks football in domes is for babies.

Not to be unsupportive because I grew up there, but "regional sports mecca" is a label I would have never envisioned for my fair borough. But if the Jets do move there, Queens will have to acquire the Nets as well, just so that we have all the -ets teams in pro sports.

So true - and would the Jets call themselves the "New Jets," a la the "New Mets"? Some many possibilities!

I don't care where they put the Jets stadium anymore. Really. Float it on the river. Put it in Central Park. Build it right on top of Ground Zero just to really piss everyone off. I just don't care anymore. It's the freaking Jets, for Christ's sake. Nothing can scrub my mind of the Leon Hess owned, Kotite era Jets. They are a steaming pile of green donkey dung. I lack the patience for this topic now.

And now, back to posting borrowed news stories and pictures of food.

There oughta be a law!

If you don't play your "home" games in your "home" state, you don't get to name yourselves after that state. They want to stay in Jersey? Fine, let 'em be the New Jersey Jets. That goes for the Giants, too. At least the Nets were men enough to rename themselves after their home state.

Agreed Brian.

Why don't they build the Jets Stadium on Fresh Kills landfill in Staten Island? It would suit them a lot better.

I’d appreciate it if New Jersey would stop dropping their crap off in Queens. First the smog, and now the Jets?!
