Could Camp Snoopy be rubbing against the Cyclone? The Daily News says the developers behind the Mall of America are very close to buying some Coney Island real estate, with intentions to "build a mall with residential, retail and office space." One broker who handles a lot of Coney property says they are many interested developers - not just Thor Equities - saying, "There's enough of Coney Island to go around for everyone." The MoA developers, Triple Five Group, should not be mistaken with clothing brand Triple 5 Soul. And if there's one thing that strikes fear in the hearts of New Yorkers, it's the word "mall." Or, at least, developers don't like to use the word.
The News adds that once the city releases the overall plan for Coney Island's redevelopment, then Thor will share its plans. The timeline is unclear, but Gothamist guesses things will be announced this year. The Parks Department calls Coney Island New York's most famous playground, and non-profit Coney Island USA is now offering vintage Coney Island images as fine art prints.

i remember about a year ago, marty markowitz was talking about how there was going to be development of coney island. i wonder if this is what he was talking about.
Well, there goes the neighborhood. Coney Island's faded charm is going to be developed out of existence, and it will be another shiny amusement park for yuppies.
The thing with Coney Island development is that the place is a seasonal destination at best. There's very little reason for most people to go out that way outside of the spring/summer season. This is partially why the place is the way it is. It's not Times Square where people travel through it every day, it's a place you have to make a decision to go to.
Heck, even Pizza Hut/Taco Bell opened... And then closed shop there...
If they do anything, they need to recognize that.
Much of the pleasure of Coney Island is found in the fact that it's a place that clearly hasn't changed much in the last 50 years; it's one of the few places in New York that can make such a claim (it's actually the ONLY place I can think of). And who wants to ride the F train for an hour to go to a mall?
I can only get behind this if they replace "shoot the freak" with "shoot the mall rat"
