Moving Through the Park With Moliere

Gothamist loves free theater in a park (any park!) as much as the next group-blog, but to be honest we've been left cold the last few times we've gone to see the stuff put up by the Public (it's been a problem ever since that ill-conceived star-studded production of The Seagull). And anyway the next show at the Delecorte doesn't start till the 16th and by then we're going to be too distracted by the Fringe Festival (buy your tickets now!).

So if you're like us and are looking for some free theater, go check out the New York Classical Theater's current roving production of Moliere's Scapin in Central Park. And when we say roving we mean roving. When Gothamist went there were something like 300 people wandering around following the action. Its loud and over the top, but worth it. Just go to the 103rd & Central Park West entrance to the park at 7 pm any Thursday, Friday, Saturday or Sunday and wear comfortable clothes because you're going to be walking around between scenes.

What was wrong with the Seagull, we thought it was great!!! It was free to everyone who was willing to wait in the line for tickets, rather than those willing to pay tons....and that was great for us and a great show. Gothamist bitter they didn't wait in line?

oh no, we waited in line for over ten hours. it was the show that bothered us. we thought mike nichols direction was lazy and that while chirstopher walken and meryl streep were good, phillip seymor hoffman was phoning it in and natalie portman was about as interesting to watch as a rock. its probably better to say we're bitter that we did wait in line...

Fair enough - but consider your sunk costs and don't base your review on bitterness you felt on waiting in line (with the rest of us)....two - Portman is Portman, regardless of flick or writer or director, love her or hate her....three - people will argue greatly on the direction...but fourth, most importantly, that was an undeserved, unnecessary, subjective, cheap shot - that many would argue about - that should stay out of Gothamist postings like this. Save it for the actual reviews.
