Drunk vs Stoned 2 at Gavin Brown

2005_07_artsdvs.jpgWe here in this particular little sub-branch of Gothamist have been merrily on vacation for most of the past month. While we started out with long lists of things to do and ambitious pipe-dreams of productivity, we're sad to say that by this point everything has pretty much devolved into such stimulating activities as rolling over, staring at that weird place on the wall, and participating in the "Case-a-Day" beer challenge.

Needless to say we're thrilled to hear about anything that might be able to lure us away from the apartment without over-straining our heat-addled and atrophied little minds. So, we'd like to thank our friends at flavorpill for pointing what might just be the perfect summer opening, Drunk vs Stoned 2 at Gavin Brown's Enterprise.

As one can probably easily infer from the name, this show is meant to examine the past relationship between these two altered states and the artistic process, while also exploring what role they may have in the art of the present. As part of this, the show will include existing works by Thomas Bayrle, Pedro Bell, Chris Burden, Anne Collier, Bruce Conner, Martin Creed, Robert Crumb, Jeremy Deller, Mike Kelley, Martin Kippenberger, Yayoi Kusama, Adam McEwen, Henri Michaux, Richard Prince, Pruitt & Early, Charles Ray, Jim Shaw, Steven Shearer, as well as new works by Edgar Bryan, Dearraindrop, Jason Fox, Rachel Harrison, Mary Heilmann, Evan Holloway, Chris Johanson, Nick Lowe, Sarah Lucas, Abel McHone, Paul Noble, Elizabeth Peyton, Monique Prieto, Rebecca Warren, Franz West.

Meanwhile, following the latest trend of captive artists, brothers Scott and Tyson Reeder (who also helped to curate the show) will be installed in a month long residency in the gallery's upstairs space. During this time they will create a number of different works, which will be unveiled on September 9th. Works by Mike Kelley will also be on display next door at art world bar Passerby.

Besides a bunch of people probably falling into at least one of the Drunk/Stoned categories, tonight's opening party, from 6 - 8, will also feature booze flowing from an annexed saloon and a jug band. There will also be a number of other events through out the course of the show, including roof top screenings of The Rebel and videos by Kenneth Anger on August 24, a stoned drawing party on August 27, a 24-hour super jam on September 3, and “Drugs” a film program curated by Carsten Holler. There will also be closing night festivities on September 7th.

Apparently, the "rad guy" who stole the NO FAGS beer can was unaware that the artist who made the piece is gay, and it's an important part of the work. I was at the opening when the artwork was stolen and from my point of view everyone didn't "love it"when the guy stole the can, the guy wasn't that rad, and the "girl" like the punk "kid" were both adults in their late 30's who should have known better. The cops that busted Gavin didn't show up until an hour after the stolen beer can incident. No purse was stolen and nobody was punched. If you don't like the artwork that's being shown or the gallerist that's showing it, don't come to the opening.

Sounds similar to the madness that ensued at Deitch Projects during last summer's Dearraindrop closing party. The cops came to shut down the party but then jeffery himself was caught punching at some drummer dude who was playing us all a farewell tune. no charges were made concidering Jeffery's girly-arms... but I find it quiet amusing how these gallery owner's feel the self-righteous need to to out-punk the punks. I also think it has to do with the grade-school home-decore they try to pawn off as Art, shame on them. "Beeramid" indeed, at least Dearraindrop has stopped ripping off Eye's collage style for the time being. I call it "Detentional Art" because it all looks like it was done in detention class, plus it has no intent.

..... verdict.... DRUNK WINS BY DEFAULT!!!

    DRUNK, STONED AND CUFFED

FUN-loving art gallerist Gavin Brown managed to get buzzed while building a buzz for his new show, "Drunk vs. Stoned 2." The British bad boy was arrested Thursday night for possession of a small bag of pot at the raucous opening of the exhibition at his Greenwich Street gallery, which was transformed into a "Deadwood"-style saloon complete with swinging doors and a jug band performance. All that old-time revelry resulted in empty beer bottles littering the street in front of the space, which spurred cops to investigate. After they crashed the party and spotted Brown holding a bag of pot, officers brought him outside. "They were being very cool until someone threw a hot dog out the window at them," Brown told us. "It basically broke the good will. That's when they put me in handcuffs." Empty beer bottles, marijuana and flying hot dogs would seem perfectly natural at a show featuring work by legendary counterculture cartoonist R. Crumb. According to a press release hyping the show, the "two most familiar forms of intoxicated transcendence are examined through a clouded lens, blurred by pot smoke and beer goggles."

Read between the lines? --- they don;t say how the cops were alerted. this rad guy at gavin's show was pissed that a can in a beeramid had a NO FAGS sticker and stole it. everyone loved it.

then gavin fuckin HIT and SHOVED this cute GIRL who came with the kid when they were outside the space AND STOLE HER PURSE... looking for a god damned can. the cops saw it and came over to find out why he was acosting/hurting some cool chick who had blood dripping from her leg and had sprained her ankle. that's when they found the pot.

didnt his mom ever tell him it's not right to hit girls??? what trash.
