On the Plate: Upcoming Food and Wine Events

August 5: Taco Chulo Opens
Hipsters rejoice: Williamsburg's answer to La Esquina is slated to open this weekend (although you may want to call first). We don't think there's a secret handshake involved in this one, but there will be tasty tacos with organic and natural ingredients (did someone say Niman Ranch pork?) topping housemade tortillas, San Fran Mission-style burritos, and Texas breakfast tacos for brunch (and boy are we psyched for their chilaquiles and huevos rancheros!). Taco Chulo is at 318 Grand Street between Havemeyer & Marcy, and is open Friday and Saturday from 11 am to 2 am; Tuesday through Thursday and Sunday from 11 am to 11 pm. Call 718-302-2485 or visit tacochulo.com for menu and more information.

Well, we certainly hope they have figured out the logistics and have made some improvements since last year, because we don't want anything getting between us and our spicy crustaceans. 66 Water Street, Brooklyn, NY (between Dock St. and Main St.), outside Water Street Restaurant & Lounge, 12:00 noon – 6:00 pm. For more information, visit www.tigerbeer.us/.

August 8: Wine & Spice: Wine Tasting and Pairing with Indian Cuisine
Indian food is complex, rich, and often spicy, so finding a wine that can hold its own and complement the cuisine is a tad challenging. Good thing Asian Women in Business are bringing in Joshua Wesson, founder and wine director of Best Cellars, for a special wine tasting and pairing with a multi-course Indian dinner at Diwan. He'll show us what to do. Diwan Restaurant, 148 East 48th Street, 6 - 9 pm. $50 for member/$75 for non-members. RSVP with payment must be received by August 4th to guarantee a seat. Call 212-868-1368 or email info@awib.org for reservations.

August 9: Cheese & Wine: Perfect Pairings for Singles
Why is it that the women always seem to get their act together for singles events before their male counterparts? Artisanal Cheese has put together an evening of cheese pairings and potential love connections, where talk of milk types, textures, flavors, and cheese and wine pairings serve as foreplay. The catch? At this point, they're only taking reservations from men in order to keep the gender balance, so get on it, gentlemen. $75, Artisanal Premium Cheese Center, 500 West 37th Street 2nd Floor (entrance on 10th Avenue), 6:30 - 8:30 pm. Register online.

  • I heard the chili crab fest stinks this year. What is it $5 for a quarter piece of crab?

  • dude

I'm sure that chili crab tastes great, but it looks like a pile of vomit.
