This Week's Music Picks

Diplo This week is full of shows by some of our favorite new artists. On the high-profile end of the spectrum, The Hold Steady are back at Bowery Ballroom for a two night run Friday and Saturday. We're especially interested in checking out the openers on Friday. It's the Pitchfork-approved, Coldplay-tour-opening, Village Voice weird album of the week winning band called Black Mountain. On Sunday, M.I.A. plays her biggest and freeest NYC show yet at Summerstage. Superstar DJ Diplo is on the bill too, though it's questionable whether he'll show up. He definitely plays Friday with RJD2 on a Rocks Off Concert Cruise though.

Tim Fite On the lower profile see-them-before-they-blow-up side, Doveman is playing Joe's Pub Thursday night, Tim Fite opens for Weird War at Mercury Lounge on Friday, and it's local-rising-star night at Mercury Lounge Thursday with The Cloud Room and Pela both on the bill. Doveman has MP3s on their site. Tim Fite just posted an entire album stream. Listen to the performance The Cloud Room recently gave to NPR. Stream a few songs on Pela's website.

cbgb CBGB. Have you heard of it? They used to have good shows. Now they sell t-shirts and will likely go out of business within a year. In the meantime they're raising some money to fight the power, and it means lots of great shows for us through September. Tonight (Monday) kicks off the series with a special appearance by Ted Leo and a slew of garage bands hand picked by CBGB supporter Little Steven Van Zant. Tuesday is local night with Drag Citizen, Joker 5 Speed, and others. Wednesday RANA and Sound of Urchin kick out the jams. Thursday is big radio band Chevelle in a club way smaller than Irving Plaza (where they headline on Wednesday). You'll have to scroll down for the rest. CBGB veteran Patti Smith also plays a free show at Summerstage on Thursday.

And now the day by day...

"Garage rockers the Willowz hail from Disneyland's Anaheim, California, home, so it's maybe not surprising that they got a fairy tale-style break from the movies: Early last year, when founders Richie James Follin and Jessica Reynoza were still in their teens, French auteur Michel Gondry put their raucous, White Stripes-ish rock on the Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind soundtrack."
