Baby in a Gift Bag Found in Brooklyn

2005_07_giftbag.jpgA newborn baby girl was found in a gift bag that was hanging on a chain link fence in Brooklyn. The girl, about a week or so old, is in stable condition, but the residents in Bushwick who found the baby were surprised that someone could leave the baby this way. There were a few interesting quotes. Karen Vaughan, who found the baby while heading to a store for cigarettes at 4AM, told the NY Times, "I was like, 'Yo, look, a baby.'" Another man, Calvin Johnson, who also found the baby, told the Daily News, "I'm very distraught. But I feel very proud that God put me to walk that street this morning and just to go get a beer and get some chips and to save her." Another resident told the Times, "I'd like to give [the mother] a nice beating." Police are looking for the mother, and Brooklyn DA Chester Hynes emphasized that babies should be taken to "any firehouse, police station, or hospital...The baby will be okay and no questions will be asked."

If black people treat their own kids like trash (left on the street? let's be realistic ,it's black), how do they expect us to treat them any different.

We don't know that the baby is black. The NYT article quotes someone as saying the baby looked "light-skinned" and "Puerto Rican".

Also, way to go with the racism. Charming.

Well white people have done this. What does that say we should do about the whities? Yea that's what I thought.

Agreed nitpicker.

Besides, abandoning newborn babies is a multi-racial activity across the board.

Nice, way to use a story about a community acting together in the middle of the night to rescue an abandoned child as an opportunity for some dumbass racism. And after making a completely "realistic" (i.e. unsubstantiated) presumption that the child abandoner is black, how exactly does one follow with the begging question "how do they expect us to treat them any different.[sic]" I don't know, maybe because every time some white woman drowns her kids in the bathtub or pushes her car into a lake I don't feel like universally condemning the female white population as unfit parents. And every time some scumbag male pedophile molests a bunch of kids I don't think I should look upon everyone else in the same gender and racial demographic as suspect. "Not reading your replies" is obviously a troll, but it boggles my mind that numbskulls of his/her ilk can even figure out how to turn a computer on, let alone hunt-and-peck type their way to expressing their lack of intelligence online. Jesus. In addition, I'm confused about "Not reading your replies"' sentence structure. When we're talking about treating "them any different", are we referring to "black people" or "their own kids." Please be more specific when exhibiting your ignorance please. I'd hate to mistreat the wrong people through miscommunication.

A more accurate generalization would be to attack the irresponsible behavior of poor people, many of whom have a bad habit of having kids they can't afford to take care of.

You know , I've seen this type of thing happen all to many times in the past. I don't know the race of the child (And really don't care)It illustrates a problem. Why did this female do that to that child? It makes me sick to think that someday that child will grow-up and findout that He, or She was left to die in a gift bag! It was almost certainly a young girl that wasn't prepared for the responsibilty of being a parent. I wish the baby the best of luck in the future. She should have taken the child to a firehouse, or the police though!
