The First Mayoral Debate: All About Attacking Mike

2005_07_nyidebate.jpgLast night, the mayoral would-be candidates, sans Congressman Anthony Weiner (because of stuff in DC) and the Mayor (because he didn't want to), debated the issues on NY1 in the first televised forum. The big topic of the night was how the Mayor's education plans are still failing the city's kids as well as how security measures like bag checks are not very effective. Ooh, we can't wait for campaign caricatures that show "Bag Check Bloomby!" Like the Parks Mayoral Forum we attended earlier this week, Fernando Ferrer, Gifford Miller, C. Virginia Fields and the lone Republican, Thomas Ognibene, tried to establish their own distinct personalities. The NY Times pointed out that Ognibene attacked Bloomberg in "more personal terms", and we suspect that Ognibene is a dream for the Democrats, as their candidates don't have to get their hands too dirty with attacks.

The NY Post reports that it's likely City Comptroller William Thompson will endorse Ferrer. It's widely expected that Thompson will run for Mayor in 2009, since the polling makes it seem that a second term Bloomberg a likelihood. For more mayoral fun, read the Village Voice's article about the fringe candidates.

It's insulting that Bloomberg was invited to participate, but he declined to attend. This is what Bloomberg thinks of our democratic process.

no, more like he rather use his time effectively and wait for the Democratic candidate after the primaries

Mayoral Debates are part of the democratic process?

Why would Bloomberg debate these morons? He has a job to do. Miller is playing hooky. Ferrer is unemployed. Fields has a fake job. Ognibene is who?

b. When it suits him, Bloomberg touts non-partisan elections, he says to the cameras that there is no partisan way to pick up the garbage, there's no partisan way to educate our kids... but by waiting until the primary, at the very least by not engaging Tom Ognibene in a discussion, he's saying that the partisan way of elections is now suddenly the best way. So, on that, he's a hypocrite.

Thenly, New York, one of the most feverishly civic-engaged cities in the country, deserves the longest, most insightful conversation about the race for mayor we can have, and the Mayor, by playing partisan politics in THIS election, hiding in the incumbent's mansion, he's robbing us of that right. We want debate. We want candor. Bloomberg doesn't.

Bloomberg is a chicken. He also literally looks like a chicken.

I think MayorMike has done a good job governing New York given that fact that it is un-governable. New York is a circus with only one act, juggling. He always keeps a cool business head not taking things personally, unlike Kloset Koch & Don Juan Rudy who took everything personally.
Why should he debate these folks? They are just walking political and ethic agendas whose only interest is the media spotlight. None of them is a viable candidate and be avoided when ever possible

What? Debates are *good* for democracy. What kind of informed voter thinks debates are a waste of time? How can one form an opinion on candidates if they don't watch the candidates debate each other? Or do some of you people not even bother to compare candidates, and vote based on a hunch based on hot air? I bet the people who died throughout history to give us the right to vote are feeling really appreciated now.

Dear What, Totally. Americans look at politics like they look at sports. They pick a team and root. There is little or no critical thought. There is no adjudication of fact. There is a complete abdication of responsibility. And the new "we report you decide" style of a quisling access-obsessed press corps only pushes us deeper into the muck.

No, this was not intended by the framers of our Constitution who thought the age of enlightenment would advance into a even more rational, reality-based, analytical and educated populace. Sadly though, the modern Republican Party under George Bush’s leadership has essentially cancelled the advances of The Enlightenment. There is a Christo-facist theocracy taking root in this country which is being used to provide cover for a new breed of robber-barrons and I very literally weep for this country.
