ABC's September 11 Mini-Series

2005_07_september11.jpgSo, ABC has already started filming its mini-series based on the 9/11 Commssion Report. The producers had a press conference during the TV critic's press tour, and it seems that the movie will focus on the days leading up to September 11, with 180 characters, including Harvey Keitel as FBI agent-turned-World Trade Center security head John O'Neill. What Gothamist found extremely strange about this project is that it's being shot mostly in Toronto, with some filming in New York and Morocco. Producer Marc Platt said, "That was simply because of production logistics and costs. There was nothing about us not wanting to be [filming] in New York City." Logistics and cost our ass! So what if parts of Washington is shut down? Lower Manhattan isn't completely shut down, as he claims, because if Law & Order can shoot down there, why can't a TV movie? You can totally cheat locations. The way we look at it, if you film a movie about what America went through on September 11 in Toronto, you're letting the terorrists win. The mini-series will air sometime in 2006; NBC is no longer pursuing their September 11 movie.

oh boy, I knew the day would come when we would have to be assaulted by PR, movie trailers and adverts for mawkish 9/11 movies tailor made for the fanny pack demographic. I can just see it - Robert Conrad as the tough fire captain, Tim Robbins in a bald cap playing Guiliani, Oliver Platt as the courageous priest, Jeffrey Tambor as the simpering businessman. I was hoping the studios/networks would have enough sense to leave it alone.

I don't care where it's shot. What I question is why it has to be done in the first place...to bombard, desensitize and dramatize events we saw firsthand all over again? I'll skip it thanks.

I really just can't wait to miss this one. Disney, ABC's owner, will try to make money off of anything. IMO, For a "Family" oriented company, they'll do anything for cash.

IMO, This production is all about Money. It'll have the required Tear Jerker that TV loves so much and I have No doubt it will have the GW Bush's inspirational "speech" at Ground Zero too.

From talking to visitors these last three years, the rest of the country sympathizes, but isn't as hit personally. In My case, I know that the Oklahoma bombing didn't have the same impact as someone living there until 9/11 hit.

Opportunistic Bastards.

"Lets jump on this bandwagon and use this tragedy to bring in some advertising dollars!"

If they pocket just a cent from this mini-series they should burn in hell.

Well, they’re already going to hell for making Will and Grace, but for this, they should burn even more.

And so it begins. Today, the Oliver Stone movie and the ABC miniseries. Tomorrow, cheap Discovery Channel shows that feature the collapse footage over and over. After that, Emeril building Twin Towers of Taste -- bam! -- like Richard Dreyfuss in "Close Encounters". Finally, rides at Busch Gardens, beer-cozy slogans and superficially patriotic bumper stickers. (Wait, scratch that last.)

I think I saw enough of those buildings coming down on that day -- I'll pass now and forever on the crapatizations.

what do you think the odds are of them showing the bush administration lying about threats to air force 1, and dubya hiding in nebraska like a pussy? i'll also bet that they gloss over the fact that it took him 4 days to come to new york after 9/11. what a coward we have in the oval office.

This is pretty disgusting exploitation, considering the network will presumably be making money off this. Shouldnt the families of the victims be getting the profits? Afterall, its all off their backs.

Then they can show the RNC, where the republicans rented the city out from our noble mayor and had him arrest and illegally detain thousands of protestors while they exploited the crap out of a city to which they haven't nearly honored their pledges of financial support for rebuilding.

TRUE STORY: I was the first person to shoot video of Ground Zero the night of September 11th. Diane Sawyer from ABC tapped me on the shoulder and asked how I got a camera to close. (she intercepted me right in front of pace university). I had managed to rollerblade my way past all sorts of police barriers. Anyway she asked me if I would join her team and shoot the wreckage. She told me their was a media blackout that night and no one was allowed to openly shoot. So her team, which by the way, were dressed up in docotor and medical scrubs so they could get in closer (under the pretense of handing out water and face masks)gave me a paper towel roll. I then put the paper towel roll under my armpit and the camera below that. Diane was leading the way. I have her on tape just saying shoot everything... Which we did. It was very eerie. Then the ringer... when we got back to the newstruck, one of the producers mutterred, "You mean she has been walking around Ground Zero for more then 45 minutes and that's all the soot on her." I swear to God. Freaky scene. I then jumped in a truck with her and went all the way to ABC headquarters in Upper West. I saw in a beta recording room as feeds came in from all over the world. It was so crazy to see some of the foreign footage. I remember so much about that night. I then left, proceeded to roller blade all the way back down town, on Broadway, in the middle of the street, again, the whole thing was eerie. I know what was long people but figured you would enjoy it.

Too crass, too soon. At this point a 9/11 mini-series does nothing and adds nothing to anything.

Perhaps 10 years from now, but nowadays? No way.

My my, how reactionary we have all become when we don't read the article.

According to the article, this miniseries is based on the 9/11 Commission Report and will focus on the events PRECEDING September 11. The 9/11 Commission Report lays out the days and weeks leading up to the event in amazing detail, and it makes for a rather incredible read.

My point is that I think we should reserve our outrage until we really know what this miniseries is about.

An exploitative production that replays minute-by-minute the details of that morning would be outrageous. It would be distasteful, of course, and it would also provide little artistic value: with all the footage we have of that morning, what more could any dramatization bring that hasn't been seen?

However a chronicle of the days and months before 9/11 would, in my mind, not be offensive. The story of the 9/11 Commission Report is one of intelligence missteps, forged passports and secret communiques. It would be a fascinating story that can effectively demonstrate to Americans the failures of our government in the period leading up to 9/11.

In the same way that the film All The President's Men made the Watergate scandal accessible and informative, I think this project could have potential to be an eye-opener for Americans. I don't see anything wrong with that, IF it avoids exploitation of the dead.

Somebody should start one of those online petitions: Everyone who signs agrees to boycott watching all ABC programming if they air the 9/11 program and profit off of it. Either no commercials or all revenue goes toward a scholarship fund for the orphans.

The Giuliani role will be a challenging one: the actor will have to play both the Mayor of New York City and the President of the United States.

Well, I'm not outraged, but I'm still missing it. From the article, which I did read, and what is stated above: "the movie will focus on the days leading up to September 11".

I don't know about anyone else, But I don't feel like watching a miniseries in a "Docu-drama" format detailing how the US Gov't dropped the ball many times.

Lets see if we can predict how it goes: Harvey Keitel's as John O'Neill is a man facing a Huge Gov't Bureaucracy and being treated like a Man who cries "Wolf". Ultimately, his warnings prove true and he tragically dies in the WTC attack. I bet each episode ends with a cliff hanger making you wonder how it will get worse or how the Gov't missed important Cues. Or, Maybe they could use a Format identical to "24". All events happen in real time...

Do you think I summarized it properly? In Any case, I think this is the first step in trivializing it all on TV.

You could read about John O'Neill here.

Unless George Kennedy is playing one of the airline pilots, I'm going to have to simply boycott this production as an unrealistic simulacrum of true skyjacking. Also, there better be a priest/minister and a pregnant woman.

Look i know it would be hard to see the twin tower again. Variety magazine reports that Patricia Heaton from ( Everybody loves raymond) has been cast in ABC's 9/11 commission report miniseries. ABC finds its heroes. I know that Patricia heaton would let the producer show stuff that it would be hurtfull becasue she is the kind of person that is sensitive about that subject. I'm just saying just give it a chance and watch it ,u know. Because u guys r judging it without seeing it.
