Going into their series against the Colorado Rockies, the Mets were playing well, winning games and keeping themselves in the race for both the NL East and the Wild Card. While they didn't eliminate themselves from contention, one has to wonder, how good a team can be if they lose two of three against what was the worst team in baseball. Last night, the Mets salvaged their series against the National League doormat with a 9-3 win at Coors Field.
There must have been something in the air for the Mets to win the way they did. Ramon Castro hit his 3rd home run of the season and Marlon Anderson hit two homers for the first time in his career to help the Mets explode offensively. In the first two games of the series, the Mets only scored 6 runs while Castro and Anderson had 5 RBI all by themselves last night. Anderson was starting in the place of Mike Cameron who was dismal in Tuesday's loss. Carlos Zambrano improved his record to 5-9 in 7 innings of work.
The trade deadline is a few days away. Do the Mets move Cameron? Acquire Alfonso Soriano? Or play with the hand they've got? Certainly they can't count on offense from Castro and Anderson all season. That is unless Anderson is pinch hitting because then he's golden.

Please, please, please NO to Alfonso Soriano. If the Mets are going to trade with Texas, at least try and deal for someone with some upside, like Adrian Gonzalez. Keep Soriano, his huge pile of strikeouts, his poor defense, his dire injury history and the $10 million he's going to fetch in arbitration next year far away from Flushing. The Mets are on the right track. Don't screw it up by acquiring this tremendously overrated mediocrity.
wha? you don't want an even bigger payroll?
what do you think of ramon hernandez? i think they should stay with what they've got this year since i don't know if they are actually good enough to contend and maybe make some moves in the off season.
I agree, tien, the Mets shouldn't be looking to get that "one extra piece" to make the playoffs this year. It's not going to happen. If I was Omar I might see what I could get for players like Braden Looper, Roberto Hernandez, and Doug Mientkiewicz, but you want to get youth and farmstock back, not fragile infielders in their 30s with albatross contracts.
Looper and Hernandez would probably be welcome additions to a playoff contender with holes in their bullpen, and you can probably get more for them at the deadline than in any offseason deal. If the Mets could snag maybe an A-level pitching prospect or two to use as trading chits this winter, or maybe pick up a young catcher (Kelly Shoppach?), I would do a deal in a heartbeat.
As for Doug Malphabet, it's time to sell high (or at least, not sell on the dip). He's not the Mets 1B of the future -- and that's part of the reason why I'd like to see the Mets take a look at Gonzalez, who could probably be had at relatively low cost. If he can come here and play well, you're basically set at three infield positions for like the next five or six years at minimum (with Wright, Reyes, and Gonzalez).
With Soriano, it's just another bad contract at a position that isn't a pressing need right now. (Do the Mets really want to dump more money into a 2B when they are already in so deep with Kaz Matsui?)
As long as Milledge isn't in the deal, acquire Soriano. He would complete the lineup, and he's still young enough not to fall apart the way Alomar did. Wright and Reyes should improve their defense enough in the next couple of years to make Soriano's glovework acceptable.
Jeff Kent has never been known for his glove, but his O may send him to the HOF. If Soriano continues to average 35 HR, 100 RBIs his numbers will approach Kent's by the time he's 37.

Kevin, look at Soriano's splits away from Arlington. He has a .650 OPS. THat is pathetic, and at $10 million plus is completely unacceptable. Plus now Dallas Morning News is reporting that the Mets are offering Yusmeiro Petit for Soriano. No, no, no, no, no. You don't trade quality minor-league pitching for 30-year old infielders who have park-inflated offensive numbers and an iron pail for a glove.
By the way, saying that the defense of Wright and Reyes, who play on the opposite side of the infield, will make up for Soriano's klank-fu is totally absurd.
This is a terrible deal. If you liked the Mo Vaugh deal, you're going to love this one. Ugh.
If anyone here hating seeing Scott Kazmir go to Tampa for Zambrano, you are REALLY REALLY REALLY gonna hate seeing Petit go.
The horror of this potential trade is just mind-numbing. This is going to set the Mets back in a big way. What a waste -- the Mets are going to be carrying like $20 million worth of shitty second basemen. Joy! But oh no, Omar has to have his "big name." What a travesty.
I'd rather they give up petit than Reyes, which would just be idiotic. But even then, 2nd base isn't where they are in trouble -- they should have signed Sexson in the off season, and if they can get hiom without giving up a top prospect or a key player now, that would be a good trade.
Reyes was never part of the talks. The Rangers have Michael Young, so they would have no interest in Reyes. But the Mets can't give up Petit. They just can't. Not unless they are getting pitching of equal or greater value in return. And especially not after giving up Kazmir.
