Sweaty Summer Fashion Choices

2005-07_drycleaning.jpgAs we trudge through another broiling day (rain, we're sorry we ever told you to go away...now, Gothamist can't wait till you take the humidity away), Gothamist was reminded by that this is high time for dry cleaners as our ruined clothes are a cash cow. One dry cleaning business owner told Newsday, "A person wearing a business shirt can get away wearing a shirt two or three times in the winter ... but now you can't because it sweaty and sticky outside." And how - Gothamist has resigned to wearing shmatas because we can't bear to ruin another shirt (yes, that's us, looking awful and with the expression, "Do we smell?" even though we put deodorant on, because the buckets of sweat may have conquered even the strongest deodorant). Con Ed broke another NYC power usage record, with 12,551 megawatts served. Apparently voltage was reduced in parts of Brooklyn, including Williamsburg, Greenpoint, Bedford-Stuyvesant, Fort Greene and Clinton Hill, which meant those areas had to shut down "nonessential" appliances, and some power lines had to be fixed in the Bronx. Newsday also reports that there have been 11 days above 90 so far this summer - and it's not even August yet.

Are you wearing more negligible clothing in this weather? Or are you still dressed to kill? And do you have any recommendations for excellent deodorant that doesn't ruin your clothes?

Oh yeah, I heard about that Adidas stuff.. it actually uses cotton to absorb the sweat, I read. I might try that.

Well being used to summer that seems to last year round here in TX, I can understand the feeling...that sweaty feeling that is.

However, I was up in NYC last week and the heat there nearly knocked me out. But thanks to Adidas 24hr Control Absorbent-Deo I was still smelling fresh as I passed out on the sidewalk. I don't know if they have it for guys yet, but I can say it works and it doesn't mess up your clothes either.

It's aluminum free so you don't have to worry about dying while slathering it on. (Now that sounds like a winning slogan, doesn't it?)

I second that CERTAIN DRI emotion! I just started using it a few weeks ago & my pits remain dry and happy.

    Yes - Miller; thanks.

  • lexicon

it was henry miller - the air conditioned nightmare. but nature deserves to be "rejected" when it's like this outside. disgusting. i am wearing a dress today that's like winona ryder-circa-1994. but who cares? it's evil out there and this is the least restrictive article of clothing i own.

CERTAIN-DRI. no more sweaty pits! your body might not be happy, but think of all the thankful people around you.

  • First of all, who wears a shirt for more than a day, 2 days? 3 days? That's just dirty. I don't think NY'r wash theur clothes as much as we do in Jersey because no one has a washer in their apartment. If i wear something for 20 minutes or longer, IT'S LAUNDRY!

Second. Please wear anti-perspirant AND deordorant. Try Sure or Ban . You may like going "au natural" but no one wants to look at your sweaty pits or smell your B.O. Thats just obscene. Hygene please!

  • I think the clear gels usually leave less of that white deposit on your clothes (and that white stuff *never* washes out.) Personally, I like the Mitchum unscented gel.

To Edward, you're talking about the dedorant-aluminum-alzheimer's theory, right? I think the jury's still out on that one. Besides, shunning deodorant won't make any differece if you're still using aluminum utensils, wrapping your food in Reynold's wrap; eating and drinking from aluminum cans, etc...

What writer stated that air conditioning was America's way of rejecting nature?

  • Rose

Lucky me. I use Sure. And baby powder. That seems to work for me. And at work it's so friggin' cold I PUT ON A HEATER OR MY SWEATER.

  • Edward

Deodorant is made of poison. Literally. Anything that's not doesn't work. So there is no 'best choice', it all smells crappy, is mostly ineffective in this heat/humidity combo, and is poisioning our bodies. Isn't the heat great?

But then again, I know people who sweat on the white stuff.

  • 23

I prefer the white stuff to sweat.

Remember when we were complaining about the noreaster in, what was that, May?

    Those were the days.

  • Meredith

I use Tom's of Maine. It doesn't stop you from sweating, but it does work admirably well on the no-smell aspect. (On particularly awful days, I carry it with me just in case I need a paranoia-induced reapplication.) And it definitely doesn't ruin clothes like anti-perspirants do.

Plus, I hate the smell of sweat breaking through the anti-perspirant. All sweaty-chemically. Yuck. I love Tom's.

I hate summer because people wear shorts and shorts are nasty.
