This Week's Music Picks

Antony Recently nominated for the the UK's Mercury Music Prize, NYC's Antony & The Johnsons released one of the most unique and captivating albums of 2005. "Antony , the ethereal voice of Antony and the Johnsons, sings like a Wim Wenders angel and—when necessary—can swear like a sailor" [Village Voice]. Last time Antony played Bowery Ballroom, he was joined on stage by Rufus Wainwright and Boy George, both of whom also appear on his album. CocoRosie, who also collaborate with Antony in studio & on stage, open the show at Town Hall on Thursday (tix still available)

Oneida The East River Amphitheater is a beautiful outdoor stage on the East River where you can watch bands and boats at the same time. "Oneida has blown the ears off of listeners over seven years, 6 albums, countless odometer miles, and a soundtrack for a documentary about demolition derbies by forging their own diverse sound." [Ace Fu Records] Extra Action Marching Band performed with David Byrne at the Hollywood Bowl a few weeks ago. Oxford Collapse and Tall First join Oneida and Extra Action Marching Band for a free afternoon show at the Amphitheater on Saturday. (Oneida @ Tonic Friday too) (lots more Marching Band shows...see below)

MC5 "Alongside their Detroit-area brethren the Stooges, MC5 essentially laid the foundations for the emergence of punk; deafeningly loud and uncompromisingly intense, the group's politics were ultimately as crucial as their music, their revolutionary sloganeering and anti-establishment outrage crystallizing the counterculture movement at its most volatile and threatening." One day before their free Central Park Summerstage performance (w/ Sun Ra Arkestra & DJ Spooky) on Saturday, MC5 will stop @ Northsix in Brooklyn, NY to perform their groundbreaking album, Kick out the Jams, in its entirety. "I'm always glad, but often disappointed, to hear recordings from an unfamiliar local band. It's rare that one grabs me right out of the gate, that blows me away from the very first listen. But Aberdeen City, cranked inside my car on 93 North, did just that." [Bradley's Almanac] (@ Mercury Lounge)

For many it will be a hard decision between driving to Jersey to catch Ozzfest at PNC Bank Arts Center or staying in NYC to catch the Backstreet Boys at Radio City Music Hall.

For us it's a hard decision between seeing Regina Spektor play a benefit show at Tonic or Scissor Sisters play their last secret residency show with local superstars Clap Your Hands Say Yeah at Mercury Lounge.
