Welcome to the weekend everyone. It's going to be NOT HUMID. So go outside and turn your a/c's off and conserve some energy before there's another blackout.
MOVIE: Quickflicks is this city's "hippest filmmaking co-op" and tonight their having a screening at Gothamists favorite ever venue...The Frying Pan! It's a series of boats and decks people, need we say more? Tonight will feature eight filmmakers who have created works within 30 days. That's very fast. [via FreeNYC]
Date: Friday / 7pm / Frying Pan, Pier 63 (23rd and the Hudson River) / Free
THEATER: The Girlhood of Shakespeare's Heroines consists of five monologues uniting to create one interconnected piece, much as Shakespeare’s five acts create one play. In these five monologues five young women, characters from Shakespeare’s plays, discuss as never before their views on love, life, sex and theatre. We still have our Riverside Shakespeare from college, so we're definitely going to try to catch this.
All weekend / 8pm / Looking Glass Theatre [422 W 57th St] / $15 (save $5 with this coupon)
MUSIC: We're pretty certain it's all covered here at the end of this post. Gothamist is seriously considering heading to Bowery tonight for Teenage Fanclub. We haven't listened to them for a long time, but they have lots of mp3's on their site (accompanied by cute illustrated cassette tapes) and it still sounds good to us.
OVER THE TOP: This weekend Coney Island brings us yet another...interesting...contest. The 23rd Annual White Castle Kingsboro Golden Arm Championships where more than 100 arm-wrestling contenders try out for a spot in the Empire State Championship Finals. Arm wrestling sponsored by White Castle. Awesome. [via Papermag]
Astroland on the boardwalk [between W.10th and W.12th St], Coney Island / 12:30pm / Free.
