Virtuous Vittles

2005_07_food_angelwithhalo.jpgLiving in New York, it's easy for our gourmet desires to take us on Mr. Toad's Wild Ride. Indulgence and gluttony seem to be the Big Apple norm - from hamburgers stuffed with short ribs and foie gras, to chocolate tarts served alongside pink peppercorn ice cream and red wine sauce. But sometimes your stomach needs a rest. That's when Gothamist turns to the healthier, organic options in town, trying to detox from our usual diet of fabulous fatty fare and calorie-laden cocktails.

Old vegetarian standbys like Angelica Kitchen and Zen Palate are places where we feel virtuous as we dine. And, newer spots seem to be popping up to assist us in our virtuous void - Counter in the East Village and Siggy's Good Food in Brooklyn Heights to name two.

Mind you, it is difficult to keep our appetites in check. An Un-Chicken Taco is all well and good, but while we're munching on seiten and bean sprouts, we know that we'll be back to our evil ways eventually. Can't you hear the truffle butter calling? How about the pepperoni pizza?

RESIST!

And, where do you go when your tastebuds feel like wearing a halo?

Gobo--it's delish and they deliver!

The place that feels the most virtuous meal in the city for me is Ayurveda Cafe at 94th & Amsterdam with a well flavored veggie meal for a great price. Tho' you have to watch out for the "cult" like experience with their association to an ayurvedic center-you used to be able to get your meal for free if you will allow them to proselytize to you.

where did you get that angel picture?

The last time I visited New York I went straight to the vegan bakery on 14th Street near Union Square. But much to my disappointment the place had closed! Can't remember the name of the place though... does anyone know any details about the closing? Did it move to a new location?
