David Brooks Hearts Judge Roberts

2005_07_davidbrooks.jpgThanks for the morning giggles, David Brooks! The NY Times Op-Ed columnist's valentine (literally!) to Supreme Court Justice John Roberts is dripping with hearts and little cupids with arrows and birds singing... If Brooks could have composed it in Shakespearan verse, Gothamist suspects he might have. Here's the opening:

Roberts nomination, how do I love thee? Let me count the ways.

I love thee with the depth and breadth and height my soul can reach. I love thee freely, as men strive for right. I love thee because this is the way government is supposed to work.

Judge Roberts, David Brooks would totally choo-choo-choose you! We also laugh because we're sure some conservatives would say loving a nomination is not in the Bible.

Did anyone else find it funny that the President admonished a possible Supreme Court Justice nominee for not cross-training? Gothamist shouldn't find it so funny, but we do.

Yeah, beginning a column as though it were a sonnet is just so faux-populist. And those clowns in Union Square are really inspiring. This country won't be worth a damn if they can't kill their unborn children at the drop of a hat.

i didn't realize brooks was trying to hide the fact that he is a full-on party-line conservative. he's always seemed pretty open about it to me.

"Brooks uses a faux-populist perspective to mask the fact that he's a dyed-in-the-wool conservative. "

Exactly. I was just going to say "Brooks is a douchebag," so thanks!

  • Wow. The only thing that column was missing were little hearts over the i's.

I actually like Brooks, even if I rarely agree with him, but wow, does he look like a dope after this. It's not even all that funny...

Erm, that's not Shakespearean verse. The sonnet that begins "How do I love thee?" was written by Elizabeth Barrett Browning.

An MA in English is a terrible thing to waste....

Brooks uses a faux-populist perspective to mask the fact that he's a dyed-in-the-wool conservative. Sure, he's a bit self-deprecating and always has a homespun anecdote at the ready, but the reality is that he'll kowtow to the business elite at every chance and denigrate the intellectual elite at every chance.

Oh yeah, and this column was just plain lame.

That's interesting about the excercise grilling. Whenever I watch CSPAN it strikes me how out of shape all the politicians are. It looks like when they aren't pontificating at a table they are laying on their office couch stuffing themselves with ho-hos, freedom fries and chips. This Wilkerson guy sounds like mr. sour grapes. I also don't believe he's running 3.5 miles a day, although he could probably beat rehnquist or stevens in a marathon. This Roberts guy seems o.k. except he could be a cultural philistine. I noted that the only hobby mentioned was 'watching sports.' I think David Brooks column is an instance of sexual harrassment and should be looked into by the ny times ombudsman.

Brooks to Roberts: "You had me at no Roe."
