My long time favorite has been Roccos bakery on Bleecker west of sixth Ave. They make their own ices, and have a not-too-sweet and very refreshing lemon ice, and cremolatta, a sot of almond flavor with a milky base, to name two. They serve the ices at their tables or in those paper cups to go, a dollar (if I remember correctly) for a small size. I highly recommend these ices, I have never had better, and have been going for years..(and years and years). Try it, everyone I bring there loves them.

Rita's is the bomb - http://www.ritasice.com/. You haven't lived until you've had a gelati. No NYC stores yet, but where I live in Woodbridge, I've filled a couple of buy 10 get one free cards!

Uncle Louie G will always get my vote with Deliciado Coco Helado second. But Deliciado Coco Helado is second for only one real reason. The vendors I have encountered don't use ices squeeze cups! They just use waxy dixie cups and such. What's up with that? The whole point of an ice is being able to squeeze the heck out of the thing when you're near the end.

Deliciado Coco Helado, please start using/selling squeeze cups and sales will pick up like crazy!

Any Deliciado Coco Helado cart -- the one at 96th and Broadway often has parcha (passionfruit), my favorite flavor.

Yeah I second the Uncle Louie G. Vote. Check out this list of flavors: http://www.unclelouieg.com/italian-ices.html
I do wonder though if the "Uncle Louie G Hummer" I see driving all over Park Slope runs on hybrid diesel ices. 'Cause if it doesn't that could cause trouble in ice-land.
