I live a few blocks away from this and I have to agree with HC about the obnoxious cashiers. Still, I miss the old Gristedes. It was great for Friday night "karaoke" (they played the best 50s music) and I knew where everything in the store was. The new one on 103 just isn't the same.

I used to live in the building adjacent to the Gristedes (where Turquaz was located); I moved in as they were building the Gristedes up. Needles to say I was shocked watching CNN yesterday in my office park's cafeteria --- When I lived in my building, I had a crappy studio but at least it had unobstructed south and east views so I could tolerate the overall suckiness of a having a bed with a view of the "kitchen" area. BTW the Gristedes had horrible service and I would go out of my way to pay MORE just to avoid the obnoxious cashiers. Good riddance to Gristedes but I hope it's good riddance to the developer putting together that uncalled for giaganto tower on that site.

kelie, the Metro Theater still stands. While renovations have been been slow on many of the superficial elements of the theater, it remains a 'small, local film house' catering to the Upper West Side. It's a little rough around the edges, but the films are what draw audiences. If you'd like to visit a theater that doesn't look 'too grimy', I'd recommend catching Rebound at Loews Lincoln Square. It may be more to your liking. Those who truly appreciate the Metro Theater will continue to attend shows; the rest will pride themselves on their beautiful notions.

Thanks for the shout out, sp. Yes, LTDO, one more example of classic NooYawk is long gone. There are probably a few fossilized oxtails in the Gristedes rubble. The nabe used to be filled with such places, now supplanted in almost a cliche way by overpriced yuphead feedtroughs.
I'm going back out to the site to see how the nooz covers this. Later

What is the deal with the labor situation at Garden of Eden? You know, the new, gentrified version of the Gristedes up on 107. The yuppies come in and they bring their black clouds and black beamers. It's a good thing someone's taking that building down. It was a wreck. Too bad about the Metro. Though, honestly, the place always looked a bit too grimy for me. Still, the notion of a small, local film house was beautiful. It should be refurbished, not demolished. If they are putting in new high-rises, then the rent we're paying in our prewar disasters should drop. Like that's ever happening !

Moe! You remember the old Tacita? How awesome. My first tastes of yellow rice and black beans, squid with rice, and fried pork chops were at their counter with my dad when I was a little kid. Their resurection was sadly short lived. I wanted to steal their sign off the scaffolding but it was removed just the other day...

At least this event and the London terrorist bombing happened while people were going TO work. It would suck to work a full day and then get blown up or have a building fall on you on the way home.

Yeah, I live in this nabe too and as I type this I hear helicopeters flying overhead.
There have been many construction related mishaps here but this is the first I know of to cause injury.
BTW, food lovers, the condemnation of the Gristedes site led to the demise of one of my favorite Cuban-Chinese restarants, La Tacita de Oro, which had been doing business in the nabe for maybe thirty years, previously at the site of the incredibly crappy Metro Diner on 100th St. Rest In Peace.

I work at the Metro Theater and construction is underway in the space next to us. Just yesterday I took pictures of a protest that was also filmed by news crews from NY1 and Fox5. I'll get to posting the pics soon.

this is my neighborhood... i walked by there the other day (monday i think) and there were construction workers doing the demolition -- i saw at least 5 guys there. it's a pretty large building. if they were working then some of them might be in there.

i think the building sits on the crux of where the 2/3 crosses over and the line of the 1 subway. it has to be a pretty deep collapse if they had to shut the subways down.

a 30+-story building?!? bad idea for this neighborhood. thanks for posting all those links, gothamist.

Holy CRAP -- I lived half a block from there until two years ago. That Gristedes always made me feel a bit wary, all decrepit and tilted and not too terribly well-constructed... I guess we know now.

Hope everyone is OK; I see that there's an infant in critical condition at St. Luke's, but she's expected to survive.

Yep, it is. It's not construction yet, though -- they are still in the process of removing all the rubble from the former Gristedes.

Holy crap! I was wondering why that helicopter kept hovering in the air as I was walking to the B/C station on 96th ST. I take it this the construction that's taking place across from the Metro Twin theatre?
