LoSide Diner

LoSide DinerAs we mourn the passing of the Times Square Howard Johnson, at least we can gain some comfort knowing that it's spirit lives on at the LoSide Diner (pictured at left during construction), scheduled to open this weekend. Brian Crawford, former executive chef at Dean & DeLuca, calls the new Lower East Side comfort food joint "an ode to HoJo's," despite the fact that it's not painted orange and turquoise.

  • "The food was over-priced, and was nothing special at all."

That could be said about dozens of places in NYC. In fact, most of the Lower East Side foodie establishments like *cough* Katz's Deli *cough*.

But what Howard Johnson's had was character. Even if the food stunk, the drinks were cool and it was always fun to bring people there who came in from out of town.

And the place should be given its propers for the simple fact that it survived the Times Square of the 1970s and 1980s and only met its demise when real estate needs kicked in.

    I'll miss you HoJo!!!
