Because there is always room to bridge the divide between geographic map and subway map, Gothamist welcomes onNYTurf's Google Map NYC-Subway Hack. While it's a work in progress (works best on Firefox), it's stll a good look at how far a subway stop might be from your destination (not to mention) which subway stop might be closer). Hopstop gives great walking directions, which Trips 123 does as well, but they lack maps. So, thanks, Will!
Gothamist on the geographically correct subway map, the subway map that shows all the different lines (even the same colored ones), and the Dynamap which layers three different kinds of maps onto one.

Nice, but it locked up my Firefox browser for a few minutes!
I still maintain that the best subway map in the whole city is run by straphangers:
www.straphangers.org
just pop in the street address and waaahhhahla: a map
easy, simple, and they fight the MTA tooth and nail for the people.
It's really great how anything West of NYC is LA, all South is the South Pole, East is Ocean Monsters, and to the North is only Canada.
Pretty accurate if you aske me ;)
Another great implementation of Google Racing Formula 1 Circuits Satellite Maps.
