What a disaster yesterday was. After prominently featuring the Cloud Cult show at Knitting Factory last week, it ends up the show was never actually happening. If you bought tickets, contact Knitting Factory and/or Ticketweb and get your money back. The good news: we wouldn't have been able to talk about Cloud Cult on Gothamist otherwise, so hopefully you discovered a great new band (still haven't listened?).
It's Siren time again. Every year the Village Voice assembles some of the best indie performers for a day long free show on two stages in Coney Island. When not checking out this year's lineup of Spoon (as seen at Webster Hall), Mates of State, Brendan Benson, VHS or BETA, Dungen, Q and Not U (last chance to see them), The Dears, Ambulance Ltd., Morningwood (listen at Myspace), Diamond Nights (a "band to watch"), Detachment Kit, Saul Williams (download a free mixtape), Be Your Own Pet, and Nine Black Alps, you can check out the boardwalk, rides, beach, food, and freaks. The Saturday schedule and performer descriptions are posted at the Village Voice.
This week also sees the return of two music pioneers. The godfather of alt-country Jay Farrar is in town with his band Son Volt. It's been eleven years since Farrar split from Uncle Tupelo bandmate Jeff Tweedy (who went on to form Wilco). It's been seven years since Son Volt last released an album. That's about to change on July 12th when 'Okemah and the Melody of Riot' appears in stores. If you can't get tickets for the Tuesday night Son Volt show at Bowery Ballroom, you can also catch them for free on Thursday at South Street Seaport. Meet Jay & band on Wednesday at J&R Pop Store (23 Park Row @ Noon)
"Dinosaur Jr. was largely responsible for returning lead guitar to indie-rock and, along with their peers the Pixies, they injected late-'80s alternative rock with monumental levels of pure guitar noise." [Bluebeat] Although Lou Barlow was kicked out of the band in 1989, Dinosaur Jr. didn't technically break up until some time in the nineties. This year Merge re-released three of Dinosaur Jr.'s classic albums which coincided with the announcement of a reunion tour. The tour is here, and it's at Summerstage on Thursday with Broken Social Scene, Radio 4 & Magik Markers. If the $37.25 (plus charges) ticket price seems a little steep, consider the $15 you'd pay just to see Broken Social Scene play at Bowery Ballroom (well...we would). Then again, you can always listen for free from outside the gate.
And now the day by day...
Monday - 11th
"These guys definitely would appeal to the fans of Les Savy Fav, Built to Spill and even Devo. The Detachment Kit just get it. They rock and they rock hard." [Oh My Rockness]. Catch Detachment Kit tonight at 169 Bar, Thursday at Magnetic Field in Brooklyn, and finally on Saturday at the Siren Festival. Download MP3s at their site.
"tonight is the nyc debut of richmond electropunk outfit VCR. don't sleep, kids. of their EP, which you can stream here, the almighty pitchfork says: "there's at least as much Dischord abrasion and punk gallop in this stuff as there is Human Leage dancefloor pyrotechnics." and tamar says they've been known to play shows that involve "8-foot cardboard bongs, flags of kurt cobain, and bloodied noses." in other words parrrrrrrty!" [Catherine's Pita] (with Detachment Kit @ 169 Bar)
"Cinders is a great little spot on Havemeyer (the most beautiful block in all the land) that has everything from a gallery to a store that sells zines, one-of-a-kind clothes, records, and silk-screened paper towels. They organize concerts as well, turning the gallery into a porch of sorts, inviting musicians from down the block and all over the world to play in the intimate little setting. The band I know from tonight’s line-up is the Good Good. I just heard their new record the other day, and I still haven’t wrapped my head around it. It’s like Gang Gang Dance except for not as punk. Just go see them." [New Release]

Not fair. Way too many good free shows in the same day. Even Worse - Dinosaur Jr. (which is not free at all) is also tonight (see above). You can't go wrong with Ozomatli in Prospect Park, Calexico in Castle Clinton, or Son Volt at South Street Seaport (see above). wah.
Dungen came all the way from Sweden to play Siren festival this year, so it makes sense that they booked a few extra shows while they're here. Their show tonight at Maxwell's is sold out, but the one they're playing with Tarantula on Saturday (as Ta Det Lugnt) at Mercury Lounge (same day as Siren) is not. Read the Pitchfork review that made them famous and an interview in the Village Voice.

hey brooklynvegan, doesn't it bug you that the Gothamist Staff page still lists the wrong URL for your blog? make 'em fix it!
It's ok - he links to himself quite a bit!
where is the error on the staff page? it links to his site correctly...twice.
Jen, you're too slow :-) tien just fixed it. (and thanks db, I hadn't noticed that)
Royksopp Wednesday! Yes!
I can't believe there's a GNR "tribute" band...
Dinosaur Jr? You mean the band that proved that it was possible to be even less talented and less interested in learning to play your instruments than Neil Young and still dupe people into buying your albums? Can we forget about them, please?
