In the Times, they said that people were building little makeshift shrines for him: I don't really get that. Wasn't he shooting the whole place up? Is the perception that the cops were somehow wrong for stopping a guy who was acting like Yosemite Sam?

I think the aunt should be cut some slack; I think there's a large amount of cognitive dissonance when the little boy you watched grow up turns into a total screwup. NB: despite what one sees in the movies, the two-hands-two-pistols fusillade is a good way to miss the broad side of a barn.
