Upcoming

2005_07_arts_rainy.jpgGothamist was supposed to spend the evening on a rooftop with friends and free drinks. Thank you rain for ruining the start to our weekend! We usually don't take a negative tone around here, but it needs to be said: Gothamist hates weather. It's also going to ruin at least one of the below events, see if you can pick which one. When you're done with that, grab your umbrella and rain boots and find fun indoors - after all the sun will come out tomorrow, or like, in August.

PARTY: Tonight Cooper-Hewitt begins another summer of sultry sunset parties complete with deejays and dancing in the Arthur Ross Terrace and Garden of Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum. Of course, the rain may put a damper on this one, but luckily there will be a new party every Friday night through August 26. The first DJ to spin at the Museum this summer will be Monica Pineda, aka DJ Moni, whose special mix is Afro-Latin, Brazilian, jazz-inspired broken beat, hip hop, classics, and house.

Every Friday night, 6-9pm // Cooper-Hewitt's Arthur Ross Terrace and Garden [2 East 91st St] Garden Entrance on 90th Street, between Fifth and Madison Avenues. The cost is $10 (museum admission).

ANOTHER PARTY(!): Tomorrow night Technicolor 9 is at Asterisk Gallery. Lights, art, tunes and a rooftop are promised (although indoor shelter is also promised).
Main Room bands: Detachment Kit, Overnight, Cobretti, Kingsland. With DJ Mark Aver.
Back Room: **k DJ Set, Society Cleaners - Laptop set
Projections by Kirsten Thoen and Artwork by Jeffrey Major, Darren Carona, Shadrach Lindo, Matt Relkin, Isaac Aden

Saturday, 9pm // Asterisk [258 Johnson Ave. Bushwick] // $5

TOY EVENT
: Celebrate the launch of the Good Wood Gang! This is Giant Robots latest line of toys, so FreeNYC tells us. Super sized Good Wood silkscreen posters (limited to 150), paintings of 1000 Gods and Demons, gifts and more surprises are promised.

Tonight, 7-10pm // Giant Robot NYC [437 East 9th Street between 1st and A] // Free

2005_07_artsbballplay.jpgTHEATER: In his new one-person show, Paul Boocock shifts his insights and opinions from money and corruption to adultery, drugs, and civil rights. No, this is not about Supreme Court justice nominations; this is about baseball. - via OffOffOnline

All weekend, 9pm (The show closes on July 23rd)// Downstairs @ The Flea [41 White Street] // $15

MOVIE: Tonight In Tandem Productions & Anthology Film Archives present a benefit screening of Still We Ride, followed by a facilitated discussion/Q&A with the directors as well as attorneys, activists, and defendants featured in the movie. The film, incase you don't already know, documents the shocking showdown between the monthly Critical Mass bike ride and police in New York City. On Friday August 27, 2004 just days before the start of the Republican National Convention, 264 people were arrested while participating in the monthly ride.

Tonight, 7pm // Anthology Film Archives [32 2ND AVE.] // $8 (proceeds will be divided amongst the respective legal funds of two organizing groups - Freewheels and Times Up.)

MUSIC: Alt-hop blues star Clarence Greenwood (aka Citizen Cope) is a Gothamist fave, so we're pretty excited to check him out (for free!) this weekend. Provided the weather doesn't ruin it for us, that is. In which case we'll just listen to him on our iPod, curse mother nature and pretend we're in the park.

Sunday, 3pm // Central Park SummerStage // Free

You know where you can find other music events going on this weekend right? Yeah you do. Right here at the end of this post.
