London Gets Back to Work

2005_07_tubeempty.jpgLondoners returned to work today, as the subway system was back up (with a few stations closed) and buses were running. The death toll is now 50 people, at least, with 700 wounded. Police are investigating the blasts, noting that timers were used to set the bombs off and checking out links to Al Qaeda. There have been many distressing eyewitness accounts of being in the subway stations, in subway cars, on buses, and on the streets during the explosions. Londonist has been covering the story, with reports of hotel room gouging, how weekend shows were affected and one person's journey to work the day after. Further news on the London Attacks from BBC News and the NY Times.

There was definitely tension. I go between spring and 28th on the 6, which isn't really a high-risk stretch, and a lot of people spent the ride looking around uncomfortably and suspiciously.

Oops above meant for post on nyc commute

Would you look at that subway car!...
It makes me sick. God, how I hate the NY MTA. They're not even competent crooks.

The london tubes have cushioned seats and the stations smell like soap and they have chocolate vending machines in them. It's like a commuter's paradise down there. Maybe it's time to move.

is that really their car?
How much is their fare?!?

Believe me it doesn't usually look like that! Think the picture above, and add about 200 people all trying to ignore each other. The smell of soap soon dissipates...

I am an old person now but I remember the blizz in London and the courage that the british people displayed whenever that they were hit by bombs or v1 or v2.I lived in Belgium and we had our share of bombing and to hide in our cellars when we were bombed first by the wermark or gorings air force and later in the war by the americans but we did not minded them we were glad that they were infligting all the damage to the germans.I should always be grateful for our liberation.Gigi
