On the Plate: Upcoming Food and Wine Events

July 8: Red, White & Views! Sparkling Tasting
The 14 Wall Street Restaurant is highlighting eight types of bubbly for you to sip while you enjoy their panoramic views. Nosh on artisanal cheeses and learn, once and for all, how to open those bottles without taking out someone's eye. $40.00, reservations required. Email NIKI_LEBOUQUIN@ yahoo.com or call (212)233-0320. 6-8pm, 14 Wall Street, 31st Floor Penthouse.

2005_06_food_chowhound.jpgJuly 9: Chips, Soda, and a Chowhound
Drop by Tekserve (119 W. 23th b/w 6th & 7th) between 2pm-4pm for a free tasting of some delicious and obscure potato chips and colas, courtesy of our friends at Chowhound. Big dog Jim Leff will lead the tasting and sign new copies of the recently-released "The Chowhound's Guide to the New York Tristate Area." Tekserve will also be raffling off three 1GB iPod shuffles to attendees, but only 200 tickets will be available for the tasting and raffle, so get on it!

July 10-12: 51st Summer Fancy Food Show
Over 2,400 exhibitors from around the world will be bringing more than 70,000 specialty foods, wines and spirits to the Javitz Center for our enjoyment. We've already stopped eating for the rest of the week in preparation. $35 per person, $60 after July 8th. Register online.

July 12: Mozzarella 101
Learn everything you wanted to know about these balls of cheesy goodness from Paula Lambert, founder of The Mozzarella Company in Dallas, Texas, and author of The Cheese Lover's Cookbook. She'll share how to string and form mozzarella balls, bocconcini and rolls with pesto and prosciutto fillings (we love those). 6:30pm - 8:30pm, Artisanal Premium Cheese Center, 500 West 37th Street 2nd Floor (entrance on 10th Avenue). Register online.

July 13: Arthur Schwartz on Ethnic Identity and Food
Native New Yorker Arthur Schwartz, author of Arthur Schwartz’s New York City Food, has chronicled the city’s culinary history from its Dutch colonial beginnings to its current status as the multicultural food capital of the world. Join him as he discusses how food helps to define ethnic identity. A special viewing of the Tolerance and Identity: Jews in Early New York, 1654-1825 exhibition will be held at 6:00 pm preceeding the program, and a reception and book signing will follow. Museum of the City of New York, 1220 Fifth Avenue. $5 for Museum members, seniors, and students; $7 for non-members. Reservations required; call 212.534.1672 ext. 3395.

Tekserve is located on 23rd Street, not 37th.
