The Yankees got younger on Thursday, but did they get any better? After organizational meetings on Tuesday and Wednesday, the Yankees made their first changes, cutting ties with relievers, Paul Quantrill and Mike Stanton. Both were designated for assignment meaning the Yankees have ten days to trade or release them. Jason Anderson, a former Yankee prospect who was traded to the Mets for Armando Benitez and Wayne Franklin, a 31-year-old lefty specialist, will take their place on the roster for now.
Quantrill seemed to have been overused last year. After a stellar first half, Quantrill collapsed in the second with a 7.09ERA. This year he never got on track and leaves the Yankees with a 6.05ERA. Stanton was brought back to the Yankees because the Mets were willing to take Felix Heredia. While he pitched effectively against lefties, he had only thrown six innings since the start of May.
Getting rid of two older relievers is just a start to changing what ails the Yankees. They must find a way to prevent Joe Torre from using Tony Womack as a starter ever again and improve their woeful outfield defense. Mark Kotsay or Mike Cameron would be a huge upgrade defensively, but unlike years past, the Yankees reportedly will not mortgage their future to improve their club in 2005. Thirty days until the trading deadline, it should be an interesting July in Yankeeland.

The worse thing they did was trading Soriano for Arod.
Nah... I think dumping tino for giambi was worse, the kicker was dumping Nick Johnson and believing that Giambi was the Yankees 1B of the future.
giambi for tino turned out to be a big bust, but at the time, it seemed like a good idea. giambi was the mvp. hindsight is always 20/20. cant really blame them for trading nick johnson, they got vasquez for him and he was young and supposed to be great, instead he turned out to be bunk.
i think getting randy johnson instead of carlos beltran was a mistake, sheffield instead of guerrero was a mistake. not getting david ortiz was a mistake. re-signing stanton was a BIG mistake.
i'm glad they are keeping the rookies and are calling up more. ive had enough of the high priced marquee diva "veterans"
Stanton pitched a grand total of what, 14 innings? How could signing a guy like that qualify as a BIG mistake, and choosing Gary Sheffield over Vlad Guerrero is only a run-of-the-mill mistake by comparison? Stanton's K/9 rate was 7.71, up a full K from last year, and he has a better K-to-BB ration than last year, too. His ERA was 3.16. Stanton hasn't been bad -- he's been horrifically unlucky (thanks to the heinous Yankee defense). He's going to get picked up by another contender after he clears waivers, and in October everyone is going to be moaning about how great he's pitching for Boston/Oakland/Baltimore/ ChiSox.
No worries, though, I guess Wayne Franklin will be a lot better by pitching and playing defense ALL AT THE SAME TIME!
All in all, another pathetic move by the Yankees.
Tim the 3.16 ERA was in 2004, it is 7.07 this year, just a bit higher than Keith Foulke's.
