The city is still reeling from the racial attack on three black men, which resulted in a serious head injury for one, in Howard Beach. It was revealed that 19 year-old Nicholas Minucci, the first man arrested, had previously been arrested for beating a Sikh man after September 11, allegedly saying, "F---ing Arab! Why don't you blow this up!" Another man, Anthony Ench, was arrested, while the third member of the group, Frankie Agostini, turned himself in with his police detective father and was not charged (he's a witness). The Daily News and Post point out that Minucci aspired to a kind of hip-hop, "blingy" life, wearing a $6,000 Rolex, $4,000 gold chain and driving his cousin's $60,000 car.
Howard Beach residents had been on edge because of recent robberies, and have been trying to tell the media that attitudes in the mostly white neighborhood have changed - though some are still in the process of accepting minorities. While initial repots had said the three black men were looking for a car to steal, one of them, Richard Pope, said he was the only one who wanted to steal a car and the other didn't know anything about it. At any rate, the city has been quick to emphasize they weren't committing a crime when they were attacked. Mayor Bloomberg has aggressively been reminding New Yorkers that the city will not stand for intolerant behavior. Reverend Al Sharpton, who had led a march to protest the 1986 Howard Beach attack, had praised the mayor's response; Sharpton is also planning another protest for this attack.

A hundred years from now people will look back at situations like this and laugh at the pathos. When confronted with a) assualt with a baseball back, b) car theft, c) salty race language, the townsfolk are up in arms about salty language. I'm always baffled why people are frightened of words and how easily they can agree to give away their right to free speech.

i totally agree that Minucci should be put behind bars. i know him from elementary school and others like him... they are all racist. Being a minority in Howard Beach, i know this for a fact and have gone through it on a regular basis. yea these Moore and his friends were not up to good but Minucci did not attack them for this reason. He had no prior knowledge about their plans and actually went after them and robbed them.. now he wants to say they threatened him and attempted to rob him. He has a lot of issues. This also reminded me of Vincent Chin except that Chin was more innocent and had a fatal ending... he also never received justice. I do not think Minucci will be able to get away as easily as Chin's murder did who by the way stopped even making his payments to Chin's mother. This land of the free often becomes the land of ignorance and racism.. why is that?

I think everyone is making a big thing about this when they shouldnt be. This didnt happen cause they where black it happened cause they were looking for trouble if a white guy gets beat up by black people and they call him a white trailer park trash the black guy would get charged with assult.
