Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice visited NYC yesterday in order to bolster the NYC 2012 Olympics bid. Rice noted the city's diversity as well as the switch from the West Side to Shea Stadium: "This is a comeback city and New Yorkers have always been known for their unwillingness to say die, for their unwillingness to give up and they have demonstrated yet again that they put together a terrific bid. When it comes down to it, what better city? I'm sure that the facilities will be first-rate because everything New York does is first rate." Meh, rhetoric. The International Olympics Committee will decide where the 2012 Olympics will be held on July 6, in Singapore. The other candidate cities are Paris, Madrid, Moscow, and London; those countries' leaders will be with their respective Olympics bid teams in Singapore for the announcement, while President Bush will be there via video (!). At any rate, you can make up your own Secretary Rice and giant white balls jokes in the comments.

shes a dyke, she isnt into giant balls, white or otherwise. she's into the turf ;)
has anyone talked to a single new yorker who actually wants the olympics?
i ask because i haven't and can't help but wonder how this is still even being talked about.
I can't help but wonder why Bloomberg has the reputation of being a competent mayor when he keeps pushing these awful projects. I don't want football in Manhattan, I don't want the Olympics in any borough, and I don't want Republicans anywhere in the tri-state area.
I noticed the Mets have moved into last place so I guess a visit from this idiot is appropriate

Now, now.
Mr. Met is not an idiot.

I'm a New Yorker, and I want the Olympics here.
That makes King Hippo the second person i know that wants the Olympics. And I don't want to be snide about it -- I'm sure that there must be many people in NY that want the Olympics. But even so, I don't see the enthusiam level for the games anywhere near where it's at in other cities, like Madrid. It should be in a city that really wants and welcomes the games. Not a city whose residents are anticipating the games only for the exhorbitant prices they can rent their apts/houses out for, to tourists that will pay anything for rooms.
And i agree with Mike B. on the football. It's probably one of the sports least-NY centric.
Geez -- doesn't the US Secretary of State have more pressing issues to deal with??
I can understand the lack of interest from most new yorkers as there's always 1001 other things going on in NY. Personally, I always enjoy a good spectacle, and I like change. I also grew up spending almost every weekend with my parents and siblings in flushing meadows park, which was the byproduct of hosting the World's Fair here in Queens.
I see the Olympics not only as a chance to witness world-class competition in less popular sports, but as a chance to develop more spaces and facilities for tomorrow's new york families to enjoy.
I am another native New Yorker who would like to see the Olympics come to NYC. Sorry to burst your anti-Olympic bubble ;-)
when i was a kid i used to wish for the olympics to come here. now that i'm older and have to deal with the herds of gawking tourists every day as they clog the streets and subways, i dread the olympics and wish they would go to paris where i could visit with family and enjoy them rather than have them imposed on my life.
Dear Madame Secratary:
While you were discussing important matters of state with Mr Met, Osama Bin Laden was once again roaming free.
"At any rate, you can make up your own Secretary Rice and giant white balls jokes in the comments."
Oh, Gothamist, how could you say this!
