Going After Cell Phone Antennas

City Council member Peter Vallone Jr. is looking to have wireless providers ask for the city's permission to put cell phone antennas on rooftops. By having a wireless provider go before a community board or the City Council, he hopes to prevent the rampant antenna-ization, saying, "Right now New York has the most lax regulation in the entire country. They put their antennas across from our schools, our playgrounds, and our bedroom windows." This totally reminded Gothamist of the Simpsons episode, Make Room for Lisa, where Lisa's room houses an Omni-Touch cellphone tower, and when she moves in with Bart, she goes crazy.

And speaking of rooftops, here's NY magazine on rooftop bars.

Pete does not make a compelling case why the city council should have any business in where antennas are located. Screw Pete.

Out here in the vast 'cultural wasteland', they make the cell towers look like palm trees.

Well, they don't look much like palm trees, but it's LA.. no one's looking at the scenery, now are they?

BTW, that's one of my fave "Simpsons" episodes.

I suppose this is a stupid question, but what's so bad about cell phone towers? Is there evidence they cause cancer? I'm really uninformed about this.

Great, just what we need--to STOP wireless technologies? Today's NY Sun says it best. "Their punishment should be to have their telephone conversations cut off midsentence for the rest of their time in office."
