Arts Event Round-up

In addition to the two great events we mentioned earlier, there are also a number of other worthwhile art happenings going on this week. Plenty in fact to satisfy even the most dedicated fine art junkie.

06_2005_kentridgeart.jpgOn both June 23rd and June 27th, the Public Art Fund will be presenting 9 Drawings for Projection, a outdoor performance and film screening of short animated films by renowned South African artist William Kentridge. The films, from Kentridge's "Soho Eckstein" series, are being shown in 35mm for the first time in the U.S. and will be accompanied by a live performance of composer Philip Miller's soundtrack. The films, which will be introduced by the artist, will be shown at the Prospect Park Bandshell on the 23rd and at Central Park's Naumberg Bandshell on the 27th. More information is available at the Public Art Fund's website.

For the more active art connoisseur, curator and art historian Simon Watson will be helping even the most hapless among us navigate the often intimidating Chelsea art scene this weekend, as part of the Whitney Museum's Art Walk series. Tickets for the walk, which will take place on June 25th and July 7th, are $15 for non-members and $12 for members and should be purchased in advance at 1-(877)-Whitney.

Last but not by any means least, on June 28th the New Museum will be hosting a special viewing of Rhizome.org's 2005 Net Art Commission winners. The event will coincide with the museum's exhibit ArtBase 101, which showcases a selection of historically significant Internet art works organized around salient critical or formal themes - such as Game, Appropriation, and Cyborg Identity - drawn from Rhizome.org's online archive of new media art, the ArtBase.
