city rag has photographs of "Victorian Flatbush," the part of Brooklyn that looks rather un-city like. Upon further research, brownstoner calls it a South Midwood area - and links to a helpful realty site that explains more - and VictorianFlatbush.org a "polyglot and polychrome" "softly shaded patch of Flatbush in Ditmas Park, Brooklyn with a multitude of races. Now, Gothamist heard the term "Victorian Flatbush" last week for the first time, and we wondered if "Prohibition West Village" or "Speakeasy Harlem" or "Mafia Den Mott Street" would be the next hot new terms. Or "Drug-Addled Alphabet City" or "Gay Chelsea"? But Victorian Flatbush is quite pretty - it's like Cape May meets Queens!
The NY Sun has an article calling Vic-Flat Brooklyn's best kept secret. And for more city real estate dissection, check out Curbed.

Please stay away from that neighborhood. it's fine JUST THE WAY IT IS.
Yep, really nice but Really expensive...
I agree with Kevin! It used to be affordable, but now prices are going up...Still, it's an awesome neighborhood and I'm surprised that people haven't heard of it.
Maybe people haven't heard of it because it has so many names. I thought it was called Prospect Park South for some reason. I was walking around there one day and a private security vehicle cruised slowly beside me for a while, like it was letting me know that it knew I didn't belong there. Beautiful area, though.
I find it interesting that the Brooklyn Borough President himself says that he can't afford to buy anything in Brooklyn ("blessed are those who bought early" he has been quoted as saying). There are so many beautiful neighborhoods in Brooklyn, though.
It is beautiful and VERY VERY expensive. Sadly, it's not as safe as they say in the articles. There have been several shootings in the past few months and the Security Vehicles are not a deterrent at all. Many of the houses get broken into frequently even though they have expensive alarm systems.
I actually grew up there. It was incredibly safe when I was little (1970's-early 80's) but as I got older it started to get scruffy. Kids stealing stuff, houses burglarized and then the college student Mark Fisher was murdered and his body left on the front lawn of my old house on Argyle Road. When I was there it was called Prospect Park South and they filmed Sophie's Choice two blocks away. A few years ago I went back to show a friend around and we ran into Metallica filming a video... so yeah... you could get mugged but either way, it's a great area to check out, just like most parts of NY!
Metallica video?? Was it them sitting on the porch of a nice house sipping iced tea? (With occasional gunshots in the background?)

I grew up there as well, and yes, it's definitely not as safe as they make it out to be. Prospect Park South borders on Church Ave, which still has a fair share of crime.
I swear the security vehicles are just there for show. I wouldn't be surprised if they're in on the break-ins.
Does anybody know the exact location of the Sophie's Choice house? I am big fan of the movie.
BTW, I moved to the area about a year ago (and I love it).
