This Week's Music Picks

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah Call it shameless self promotion if you want, but the place to be tonight (Monday) is Knitting Factory for Gothamist's own Movable Hype 3.0 show featuring some of the hottest bands from NYC and Austin. Clap Your Hands Say Yeah just self-released their debut self-titled album and its quickly become one of our favorite listens of the year (read the Gothamist interview). Fans of Talking Heads and the Arcade Fire should take note (MP3s at their site). And the $8.00 bill doesn't end there. NY Press cover stars The Fame (read the Gothamist interview), local favorites Man in Gray (read the Gothamist interview), and the popular electronic rock duo Ghostland Observatory from Austin make this show more than a bargain. Even Pitchfork agrees with the hotness. Get tickets (also available at the door if it doesn't sell out).

the New Pornographers Oh Canada. Thank you for not only bringing us some of the best bands indie rock has to offer, but also guaranteeing NYC will have one or two great free shows each year in honor of your day. Possibly the highlight of the summer series at Prospect Park, The New Pornographers, Stars, and the Sadies (all Canadian) will rock the band shell Saturday night (for free) in honor of our northern neighbor. We'll probably get to preview material from one of the most anticipated releases of the year. Stereogum links to an MP3 from the new Porn album that comes out on August 23rd. Stars are "adept at crafting pretty pop songs with tons of neat instrumentation, and yet there's a darker edge to keep us on our toes." (-Delusions of Adequacy). We think they're really good, so don't get there late. New Pornographers are also at Maxwell's in Hoboken Wednesday and Thursday night (both sold out). Stars hit Maxwell's on Friday (and we'll see them again in August with the Decemberists and Death Cab for Cutie at Summerstage).

And now the day by day...

"Resplendent in bestial, gothic pageantry, this charismatic, terrifying New York performance-art-rock troupe combines perverse, homemade instruments with bass, drums and guitar to produce intricate, thunderous and downright demonic music, narrated by the Wagner-meets-Waits vocals of black-toothed Nils Frykdahl and sirenlike Carla Kihlstedt."

"Irrefutably charming, Wide Right's unfussy "rock 'n' roll fueled by cheap beer and Gibson guitars" motto fails to disclose that the Brooklyn-via-Buffalo trio is fronted by a sports-loving, working mother, Leah Archibald, who, on the band's self-titled debut (Pop Top) and forthcoming "Sleeping on the Couch," spits out Rust Belt tales about things such as industrial decline, with a weary intelligence and vodka-smeared vigor that can only be gleaned from a life spent east of the Mississippi. What the hell was that? Do all his Brooklyn friends really dwell there ironically? I guess they're rich kids who slum there just for the area code...

  • db

Colleen: DIRT has led you astray. The free New Pornographers show is in Prospect Park (the afterparty is at Southpaw). If you want to have a seat near the front of the stage, you better get on line uber-early. But, if you don't mind craning your neck and seeing the band from afar, make your way there at 7:30pm when the gates open in order to catch the opening bands. http://www.celebratebrooklyn.com/celebrate/schedule.asp

  • Of course this is funny; it's the beauty of the internet. Anyways, I'll be signing off of this thread as I have work to do. So any irate answers to my comments unfortunately won't be aptly rebutted. How can you not love dirt though? You'll be buried in it soon enough! If your face not shoved into it prior. As the hipsters say, peace out!

  • T.A.

You have an MBA? Pity. But it does a long way toward explaining your apparent lack of education.

Since my cowardly anonymous self was interested in your story and was hoping to be inspired firsthand by tales of your many triumphs personal and professional, I decided to phone around to advertising agencies and see if I could drum up some DIRT -- to maybe gain some pointers to help rescue my foundering ennui-riddled existence as an idle Manhattan millionaire! To my chagrin, however, despite casting my nets to the WPPs, the Omnicoms, the Dentsus, the Havas's, to all the satellites great and small in the advertising universe, not a single one has an employee named DIRT. However could this be?

  • You can call me Sir

    Dirt

    n.

    1. a pretentious jackanapes

    2. embarrassing information

    3. full of "hipster flavor"

Seriously though, this is hilarious. Come on, laugh at how funny you, me, and all of us are! The main thing I constantly try and convince myself of is why I don't love D-i-r-t!

I shall now go bury myself in anonymity because I am free!

  • As if I created this blog for you depressing nuts; it's actually for myself and my friends many of which who ironically live in Brooklyn.

By the way, I have an MBA (from a top school) and work for one of the world's largest advertising agencies. See, many 12 year olds can accomplish this.

Wow, look who's hiding now! I certainly admit I'm an amateur at blogging; my how quick we are to criticize a simple website. I at least comment on a neighborhood I'm familiar with; have been to, experienced. I, unlike you two cowards, have a very successful day job and have no need to please the generic masses via the internet.

And by the way, "because you are give people" is not proper English; or maybe it's simply Brooklyn-speak.

  • wow

DIRT, you sorry, pathetic little fool. How quick you are to spit venom and then rescind it when someone like T.A. calls you on your childish behavior. The internet is a place where one can speak anonymously of one wishes. Just because you are give people the fodder to justly criticize your intelligence via your awful blog, doesn’t mean they need do the same to speak against you in a public forum.

Speaking of your blog, it’s absolutely pitiful. At best it’s a 3rd rate rip-off of a New York content site like Gothamist by an amateur who is desperately trying to keep up with the times.

Do yourself a favor and just quit the internet now, before you embarrass yourself further.

  • T.A.

Gee, DIRT, as an individual who seems to have a lot of problems with capitalist marketing (if your school project er I mean your blog is to be believed), you sure are quick to play the "you are a low wage earner!" card. Shouldn't someone like you care a whole lot about income inequality? I think you should. But then again, you are also 12 years old, so perhaps you haven't gotten to "hypocrite" yet in your vocabulary lessons! Sorry broheems.

By the way, I'm a millionaire!

  • T.A.> You probably do work hard as you have a low-paying job which is why you live in Brooklyn. Sorry; the Organ isn't coming to Park Slope any time soon. You may have to travel to a "city" to see them! Sorry!

  • P.S. Colleen, welcome to New York! You'll notice that those from Brooklyn have an inferiority complex, and constantly try to convince themselves of why they live in that borough [the only reason is because it's cheaper].

P.P.S. Back to music, the New Pornographers are on the same label (Mint) as the Organ; check these girls out!

  • T.A.

Wow, DIRT, your friendly demeanor certainly has boosted my eagerness to go and shell out some of my hard-earned money to see The Organ! Thanks for hanging out the A-hole sign in clear and prominent view. Cheers!

  • Your statement is worthless; a criticism of a criticism with no point ("sarcastic" you say to remain hip and to-the-times). Not even brave enough to leave a real e-mail or website. Scared? Have nothing real to say? I'll call you sir when you're down on all fours. Meanwhile, hope you enjoy your crap borough (I love how quickly Brooklynites become defensive) as you continue to hide in mediocrity.

  • Oh DIRT, you jackanapes. How foolish of us all to think that you did not know where the best and brightest people congregate! Judging by yr website and terminology, you truly are the most enlightened among us!

    Bravo!

(This message was brought to you by the letter A and the word SARCASM)

  • Too bad it's at Southpaw; the most depressing venue in the area. Plus it's in Park Slope - the most boring (read vanilla pudding) neighborhood in Brooklyn. Crass comments aside, hang out in the WB before and after if you want some [hipster] flavor.

  • hey kids-

i'm coming up from dc for the new pornographers show on saturday-any tips? (what time should we get there, etc)...

  • you screwed it up, should be fixed now.

  • OK; I guess HTML doesn't work here (or I screwed it up). The link is http://www.theorgan.ca/.

  • If you dig Joy Division and Pat Benetar, then you'll appreciate The Organ - another fairly new northern sister.
