Kylie (Minogue) Was Robbed…

syrh_10.jpg…well not in the literal sense but ask any attendees at the Australian Wine Tasting party Gothamist attended on Wednesday and they will affirm, we should have taken first prize. Wine parties are on the rise. When you add a little friendly competition, lots of wine and nibbles and a dash of creativity it’s amazing how quickly an evening can be spiced up…even a Wednesday. The party Gothamist attended last week was one of the most creative wine events we have been to in while. Everybody had an amazing time (perhaps a direct correlation to the 12 bottles of wine) - so we figured we would “borrow” their idea and share it with you.

Select a theme.: The theme for the party Gothamist attended was Australian Wines. Feel free to get as creative as you want with your themes, perhaps a “Wines with animals on the label” party or a “German wines you can’t pronounce” party. Don’t hold back.

The rules. :Each guest is asked to bring two bottles of the same wine to the party that fits the theme (we set a price range of under $15). One bottle is put in the prize bucket and the other is placed in a brown paper bag and labeled with a word that matches the theme. For example some of the labels for the Australian Wine party were Dingo, Bondi Beach and Kylie Minogue.

The Tasting. :Each guest is given a score sheet that lists all the names that are written on the bottles and are asked to score each wine on a scale from 1 – 10 (1 being the worst and 10 being the best). At the end, when all the wines have been tasted and scored the results are tallied and the person that brought the wine that scored the highest gets to bring home the prize basket with all the wine (or the way we did it, the winner gets to take half the wine and the other half goes to the host).

Turns out even the tiniest of New York apartments can be converted into a fabulous wine bar – all you need is a little creativity and some willing participants. The winner at our wine tasting was the Marquis Phillips 2004 White table wine. It was crisp and refreshing with citrus and pear notes. Gothamist was surprised by the winning wine – we were secretly rooting for the Charles Melton Rose, a blend of Grenache, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir grapes (a.k.a – Kylie Minogue). We just can’t get you out of our head.

that's a pretty freaking ugly site for something he has put 21G's into

yo, it's "Bondi" Beach....and Melbourne is better anyway.

aussie girl: im surprised you picked up on "Bondai" but passed over "Austrian." agreed - melbourne is better.

haha! bloody seppo, I saw that after I posted and then I just couldn't bring myself to mentioning it...but it was a grand typo worthy of note! cheers! (I dare anyone to wear lederhosen as a bather in some glorious shark-infested water).

I was going to send this link to some friends here in AU, but could you fix the typos first? Yes, Melbourne is better.

where do you guys go for swim in melbourne?

and i think we are so used to our country being spelt like a european country that even we don't notice at times.

Sorry about the typos, they are all fixed...ah one of the fitpalls of trying to write your column right after the wine party.

pitfalls - not fitpalls, although I'm sure fitpalls are bad as well.

What a great idea - thanks!

What I think is most odd is to have something called an "Australian Wine Party" - without a drop of Australian Wine! Which, if I do say so myself, is amongst the finest in the world.

Joining the chorus of pro-Melbourne cheers, which I think proves that Sydney-ites are illiterate, can't subscribe to an rss feed or actually think they are living in New York already. Sad, but true.
