Ice Cream For Politicians

2005_06_unclelouie.jpgWhen Gothamist wants fluff pieces in the papers, we prefer them to involve food. So we greeted the Daily News' awesome political fluff piece with glee, as it detailed what kinds of ice creams the mayoral hopefuls like - if you can't be bothered to study the issues, then vote for the candidate whose cold dessert treat views align yours! Mayor Bloomberg like lemon ices from the Lemon Ice King of Corona, City Council Speaker Gifford Miller favors banana (B-A-N-A-N-A) ice cream from Emack and Bolio's, Manhattan Borough President C. Virginia Fields enjoys Haagen-Dazs rum raisin, former Bronx Beep Fernando Ferrer crosses boroughs for Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory's French Vanilla and Queens GOPster Thomas Ognibene loves butter pecan from his borough's Eddie's Sweet Shop. But the best explanation came from Representative Anthony Weiner:

Representative Anthony Weiner of Brooklyn frequents Uncle Louie G when he's in the mood for ice cream (the chain has multiple locations in the city), and he always gets mint chocolate chip. Weiner has warm childhood memories of eating the frosty stuff.

"His dad would try to cheer him up with a bowl of ice cream after every Mets loss when he was growing up," says Anson Kaye, Weiner's director of communications. "So he wound up eating a lot of ice cream as a kid."

Gothamist is surprised Weiner isn't tubbier! Gothamist loves this kind of reporting and we hope this is but the first installment in a series of what foods the politicians like; we hope they tread more controversial ground like where is the best pizza in the city.

The NY Times reports on photo shoot for New York magazine with the Democratic hopefuls - it seems that Weiner can hustle.

Ahh, yes... the vastly underestimated healing power of mint chocolate chip, espeically when someone buys it for you.

I'm running for Manhattan Borough President, and it's just a darn shame that I wasn't asked about my ice cream choices. I was an editor of the Oxford Encyclopedia of Food and Drink in America, and I helped research the origins of "French Vanilla" (even the word "vanilla," but we shouldn't discuss that here!), "Butter Pecan," "Chocolate Chip," and "Rum Raisin." I promise a chicken in every pot and...WHY DOES THE DAILY NEWS RUN THESE STORIES??

I'm just waiting for Blike Moomberg to find something evil about lemon ices.

Speaking of Ice cream, does anyone know a good gelato place in the city?

Hmm...has anyone seen the official Uncle Louie G's HUMMER? Yeah. Exactly.

Eefers, that Hummer served Park Slope well during the blackout of 2003. While the store on Union Street had no power, the bright lights of the Uncle Louie G Hummer lit up the night and allowed neighbors in the 'hood enjoy the tons of free still-frozen-for-the-moment goodies that Uncle Louie G was giving away from his powerless/freezerless shop.
