King George of Yankeetown Unveils His New Stadium

2005_06_yankeenew.jpg

Is it just Gothamist, or do you too, after looking at the practically sepia-toned artist's renderings of the new Yankee Stadium, imagine that if the architects, Hellmuth, Obata & Kassabaum, and Yankees could have, they would put drawings of Mickey Mantle, Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, and Joe DiMaggio as pedestrian and passerbys? Clearly, the drawings are meant to be nostalgic, a reclamation of their storied past, but they are also super nostalgic. Versus the sleek designs you see for most other new sports arenas; baseball seems to be the only sport where the past is as important as the future.

The Yankees had their press conference yesterday, and owner George Steinbrenner said, "We decided we want to stay in the Bronx. We want to do the job here. We wanted to do something for the people who've always supported this team." He also, according to the NY Times, was thrilled when people called him "King George." Mayor Bloomberg added, "We make investments. We don't do subsidies. In every case, the city will get paid back -- with a profit." Unless you're a taxpayer and the plan is for the Jets? Anyway, the Daily News and NY Times have details on the plans and improvements (better sight lines, various architectural throwbacks to the old stadium). And what do you think of the new stadium?

You know the new stadium will have 6,000 less seats to make room for luxury boxes? Thats one of the main reasons the yanks wanted a new stadium from day one.

To tell you the truth, I like the old Yankee Stadium better then the new design. Looks too old timerish

  • I think it looks really nice. My only concern is strictly personal. As an upper deck season ticket holder, what I always loved about the Stadium (and my seats, 3 rows up) was the closeness to the field. It looks like the new upper decks are set back considerably, which will take the fans (and possibly me) farther from the field.

I love that they are staying in the Bronx and hewing to tradition. The thought of a retractable-roof, billion-dollar behemoth on the west side for the Yankees (as Giuliani tried to ram through) was just horrible.

What happened to the proposed Metro North station that the state was gonna make at Yankee Stadium??

  • As a Red Sox fan who appreciates the great history of the sport, I'm pleased. Especially by them leaving old Yankee Stadium up.

As a taxpaying New Yorker, I am also pleased.
